Imelda Staunton was reportedly in line to play the Queen on Season 5 of The Crown. Her name was thrown around in several reports that surfaced last week. Netflix is reportedly in talks in finding the perfect actress to play the Queen. The streaming platform has not made an announcement on this latest news, but several actresses have been considered for the iconic role.
Rumors first surfaced that Imelda Staunton was being first considered for the role of Queen Elizabeth II in Season 5 and 6 of the Netflix royal drama. The Crown currently stars Olivia Colman, who currently sits in the throne. But that rumor is not true, according to the company. Netflix released a statement revealing that they are “currently filming season four of ‘The Crown’ but have not commissioned any further seasons as of yet.” In addition, the casting news is just “pure speculation,” at the moment.
The casting rumors originally appeared in a report from The Daily Mail. The Crown stars both Colman and Helena Bonham Carter, who reportedly gotten a psychic’s blessing to play the role. According to a separate Deadline report, Staunton was currently in talks with Left Bank Pictures to play the role of the Queen, but that turns out to be a rumor. Staunton is best known for her performance as a working-class abortionist in Mike Leigh’s 2004 film Vera Drake. She also appeared in Downton Abbey, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and Paddington 2.
There have been many names thrown around. The most obvious choice was Helen Mirren. She already played Queen Elizabeth in the 2006 film The Queen and the West End production The Audience, both written by The Crown’s Peter Morgan. When Mirren was asked about the role she responded, “I don’t think so.” The producers may be interested in having Emma Thompson or Meryl Streep become a member of the British monarchy.
