The clock is ticking ever closer to the release of the sixth and final season of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ on April 8, and closer still to Hulu ramping up preparations for its first ever spinoff show.
Based on the 2019 book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, the show will take place in the same universe ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ takes place in. The catch? Read on to find out.
Will Elisabeth Moss Reprise Her June Character In ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Spinoff?
I guess we ask this question whenever we hear of a spinoff; are we going to be seeing any recognizable faces in it? The answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no, and most times, just to preserve the integrity of the word we call surprise, maybe.
So will our somewhat favorite handmaid be returning? Well, it’s not a done deal yet, especially since the events of this spinoff is happening 15 years after ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s’ finale episode.
But, what we do know is that Agnes is June’s daughter in the TV series. This is something that although it’s hinted in the book, it wasn’t confirmed beyond all doubt.
The new spinoff to the dystopian tale will follow the lives of three women Aunt Lydia, Agnes and Daisy, who become acquainted whilst trying to uncover the secrets of Gilead as well as understand the resistance against its regime.
‘Presumed Innocent‘s’ Chase Infiniti has joined as one of the three leads Agnes Jemima. In the book, Agnes is a girl growing up in Boston as the adopted daughter of Commander Kyle and his wife Tabitha. She shares a beautiful relationship with Tabitha prior to her death.
She is then sent to an elite preparatory school for the daughters of Commanders, where they are taught to run a household, but not to become literate. Things take a turn when Kyle marries Paula, the widow of a deceased Commander, who despises Agnes.
Ann Dowd will return in her Emmy-winning role as Lydia, a divorced judge imprisoned with other women in a stadium during the establishment of the Republic of Gilead.
What Bruce Miller Has Said About Adapting Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ For the Screen
As expected, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Showrunner Bruce Miller Will Return To Helm The Spinoff ‘The Testaments.’
“The Testaments was an independent curveball created by Margaret Atwood for the series I was working on. I think she had had it in her head for a while. I tried as much as possible, and I’m still trying, to not really make The Handmaid’s Tale about The Testaments,” Miller shared back in 2019.
“The Handmaid’s Tale should be good on its own and when it’s done, it should be a nice little TV set that you put on the shelf next to the novel, and it hopefully adds to your enjoyment of it, and then you can move onto The Testaments.”
He continued, “The way Margaret did it, which is wonderful, is that you close one and you say, ‘I don’t have to open that. But let’s open the next one and see what’s in there. It could be anything.’ It is a continuation, but it’s more like a separate chapter. The horizons are more limitless.”
Alongside Miller, other executive producers include Warren Littlefiend of The Littlefield Company, with MGM Television as the studio.
