The Nanny Revival on Hold With NBC, Will Return to Broadway Instead

There is bad news and good news for fans of the classic 90s sitcom The Nanny. The revival is currently on hold as Fran Drescher works out “real issues” with NBC. During a conversation with reporters in the TCA panel for NBC’s new show Indebted, Fran Drescher wouldn’t reveal the details on the revival.

She said that she couldn’t “contractually” work on a revival of the 90s show until after it appears on Broadway. It was previously reported via Deadline that the 1990s sitcom was developed into a Broadway musical.

Fran Drescher and her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson are behind the Broadway show. In addition, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Adam Schlesinger and Rachel Boom will be writing the music and lyrics. Drescher’s fans will have to watch her on Indebted, a new television series from Dan Levy, Dough Robinson Productions, and Sony TV.

The series will center around young parents played by Abby Elliott and Adam Pally who must take care of Adam’s parents, played by Drescher and Steven Weber. They end up freewheeling after mishandling their finances and ending up in debt, as reported via Deadline.

During the panel, Drescher said this new sitcom will have a similar style of comedy as The Nanny. She wanted to join another sitcom 26 years later after the debut of The Nanny. She joked that it “is more demanding for sure,” and added that a Nanny revival would be called The Granny instead. However, Drescher doesn’t plan on changing her brand of humor anytime soon.

“I have made peace with the fact that I am never going to be Meryl Streep in my career,” she said. “I play characters that are not mean-spirited…I started my career as a hooker with a heart of gold…That’s my brand of comedy.” Drescher also revealed that Indebted will finally get its own legs after the show’s premiere episode. “New sitcoms have to find their voice,” Drescher added. “This is probably a better pilot than a lot of pilots, [but] in fairness to the series, over the course of the 13 episodes, it lands.”
