Find out what “The Resident” exec producer and showrunner Andrew Chapman just revealed to TV Insider below. Highlights include a deep dive into Billie’s life and (sigh) heartbreak for AJ! Learn all you need to know about the winter premiere of “The Resident” below.
‘The Resident’ Spoilers – Billie Sutton Begins Backstory
Dr. Billie Sutton (Jessica Lucas) has remained somewhat of a mystery on “The Resident.” But spoilers hint that when the medical drama airs its February 1 winter premiere, Dr. Sutton will gradually share more of her past. And according to producer Andrew Chapman, that backstory promises to extend over several episodes.
“A big, big Billie storyline is gonna play out starting in [Episodes] 12 and 13 and 14 — big Billie’s past, her relationship to Trevor [the son she gave up for adoption, played by Miles Fowler], her ability to be chief of surgery,” teased Chapman. “That’s going to be the primary focus of our next couple of episodes, so expect good, big juicy Billie stories.”
In the wake of Kit (Jane Leeves) choosing Billie as chief of surgery, Kit has shown her support. But did Billie, in turn, recommend a certain someone to Chastain? Chapman refused to go that far in dropping spoilers, which could offer an intriguing clue!
‘The Resident’ Spoilers – Trevor Long Learns As AJ Austin Suffers!
Spoilers for the winter premiere of “The Resident” also reveal that Trevor faces a challenge. Even as he learns from Conrad (Matt Czuchry), Trevor struggles with authority. And Chapman shared that balance between Trevor’s desire to learn and his struggles with management will continue.
“I think that Trevor’s a really interesting character. He’s the character that we’ve been searching for, which is somebody who gets to learn medicine from the people who are really good at medicine,” pointed out the showrunner. “And he gets to learn the morality of being a doctor and the morality of relationships within the world of doctoring. But Trevor’s interesting because he has real trouble with authority. He has real trouble following orders.”
And as Trevor progresses, Dr. AJ Austin (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) suffers. As his mother (Summer Selby) becomes worse, prepare for heartbreak! Chapman shared that “The Resident” wants to examine “what it is to be older and to be sick and to be the patient of a doctor who is in your family. We want to tell about — and I don’t want to get morbid — end of life that I think are really in the zeitgeists for America, for how the world of medicine deals with comfort, palliative care, death, support, life.”
