Doctor Who Christmas specials are kind of like Santa Claus. You just expect them both to appear every holiday season. Christmas specials have become an important part of the Christmas season. However, while some series embrace them, others stray from them. Some fans are wondering why there isn’t a Doctor Who 2019 Christmas special on BBC One this year.

The answer is easy. According to a report via the Radio Times, they’re kicking off Season 12 on New Years Day just like they did last year. So, it looks like New Years Day will become tradition. And fans can still look forward to a special in 2020. They just didn’t reveal what kind of special. According to the Radio Times report, showrunner Chris Chibnall spoke out about the upcoming season at an event, teasing, “you will get a special – at the end of the series.” It’s likely that it could be a Halloween or Christmas special.

Season 12 is the most highly anticipated season yet. Season 11 debuted British actor Jodie Whittaker as the female Doctor for the first time. Her role was favored well by critics and fans alike. And as it turns out, according to Variety, the Season 11 premiere had the highest ratings for a sci-fi show in a decade. That’s something to celebrate in the coming new year.

The show is also expected to bring some star power to the new season. British comedic actors Lenny Henry and Stephen Fry star in the first episode titled “Spyfall.” According to the BBC, the episode is “a blockbuster action packed two-part episode.” The series premiere is split up into two episodes, but the second part will air less than a week after the first, on Sunday, Jan. 5. There’s not much known about the Season 12 storyline. But, according to the BBC, “the Thirteenth Doctor is well and truly back with a bang.”
