But while This Is Us writers have given the “Big Three” triplets and their parents the vast majority of the storylines, three other characters recently have emerged on the scene. We’re talking about the significant others for Kate, Justin, and Randall.
And here’s a spoiler alert: One of those stars just might outshine all of the Big Three when it comes to finding success after the pandemic!
This Is Us: How Kate, Randall, And Kevin’s Significant Others Have Stepped Up
The first four seasons of This Is Us focused on establishing storylines for Kate, Kevin, Randall, Jack, and Rebecca. Then came the current season. And in season five, This Is Us writers have sought to raise our awareness of how the triplets’ significant others are surviving the COVID-19 pandemic:
- Kate’s significant other, Toby: Beautifully portrayed by Chris Sullivan, Toby has shown how the pandemic affected so many employees. Toby is struggling to find his way again after losing his job. With Kate getting employed, Toby hasn’t found life as the at-home dad as easy as he pretends.
- Kevin’s significant other, Madison: Now a mom of twins, Madison (played by Caitlin Thompson) has taken on an increasingly important role in Kevin’s life. And as we await their wedding day, we wonder whether we’ll see Madison reveal her secret dreams for their family-of-four’s future.
- Randall’s significant other, Beth: In contrast to Madison and Toby, Beth has played a significant role in Randall’s life for many episodes of This Is Us. Actress Susan Kelechi Watson only recently, though, had the opportunity to reveal more of Beth’s back story on the show. And now there are clues that it’s Beth who just might win for post-pandemic success.
This Is Us Actress Susan Kelechi Watson Reflects On Beth’s Heartbreak Over Closing Dance Studio
Talking with People magazine recently, Susan Kelechi Watson reflected on the most recent episode of This Is Us. In addition, Susan offered glimpses of what the future might hold for Beth.
In previous episodes, This Is Us viewers watched Beth shine as she rekindled her love for dance by creating her very own School of Dance. But the most recent show took us through Beth’s delight at her school’s success… and increasing heartbreak when the pandemic suddenly created a health crisis across the nation.
The relatable montage revealed Beth seeking to keep her dance school open by sanitizing all areas and having students wear face masks. Then Beth tried to keep her dancers enrolled through Zoom sessions.
But ultimately, like so many businesses, Beth could not continue. She had to close her doors, putting up a notice urging her students to continue dancing.
What happened on This Is Us to Beth is “very related to what’s happening now with COVID, it’s directly related to that,” pointed out Susan. “So many small businesses had to shut down and that was so concerning to me, just in everyday regular life.”
Susan felt true empathy for the real-life individuals who experienced similar situations. And that empathy showed as the actress portrayed Beth “in the same predicament. It just felt something that was important to note because we all watched her start up this company the year before. For so many people who started up and were doing well, they had to close their doors. It was a poignant shout-out to those who had to go through that.”
This Is Us Character Beth Just Might Outdo Kevin, Kate, And Randall, Hints Actress
This Is Us has shown how the COVID-19 crisis has impacted all the characters. But thus far, the “Big Three” triplets continue to face challenges.
Kate must deal with how to communicate with Toby in their role reversal. And for Kevin, walking off multiple sets has hit his acting career at a time when the pandemic is changing the entertainment game. As for Randall, This Is Us has indicated that politics involves stress that he must learn to deal with.
In contrast, Beth has a chance to take “some time for recovery,” said Susan. But once she recovers and has the opportunity to re-open her dance studio, her future looks brighter than any of the Big Three triplets.
Personally, Beth has the opportunity for growth as well. Susan promised that This Is Us will share more of Beth’s and her daughter Tess’s relationship.
“It’s all best intentions on Beth’s part,” noted Susan. “She just feels like she’s trying to get it right and trying to make her daughter feel as comfortable as possible with sharing her life with her. In real life, it takes a while. We may have an episode or two before they come to a resolution.”
