Stephanie Matto and Erika Owens first appeared on TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days in February. This is the first same-sex relationship on the reality TV show. While things looked great when Stephanie first arrived in Australia, things rapidly went wrong and ended up with Stephanie returning home. The main reason for the failure of their relationship is the fact Stephanie has still not come out to her mom as being bisexual.

90 Day Fiancé star Stephanie is not ready to come out to her mom

Stephanie and Erika chatted online for around a year before they first appeared on 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days. The ladies appeared to be doing well. Stephanie traveled to Australia to meet Erika in person, started introducing her to her friends, and problems were soon to follow.

During the show, Erika came out to her parents, taking Stephanie to meet them over dinner. Everything went smoothly and the family welcomed the American beauty into their home. However, from then on, Erika started pressuring Stephanie to come out to her mom.

Stephanie is very close to her mom. They live together and are best friends, which makes it difficult for Stephanie to hide the truth from her mom. However, Reality TV World notes Matto recently wrote in an Instagram Story that it is like a “ticking time bomb” being on the show. While her mom doesn’t watch 90 Day Fiancé, one day the news is sure to come out.

Stephanie finds it hard to tell her mom the truth

Stephanie describes her mother as a “traditional Eastern European woman.” She says her mom dreams of Stephanie marrying a “rich douchebag.” Fans might believe coming out to her family is easy and no big deal. Matto stresses that to her it is a “big f**king deal.” She can easily imagine her mother’s response at the news. Does she want to see that captured live on national TV? Would it be better to tell her mom in person, privately?

Stephanie has explained on 90 Day Fiancé that she and her mother are close. They live together in New York and her mom cares for her when she is sick and gives her comfort when she is heartbroken. Stephanie worries that telling her conservative mother the truth might damage this close relationship.

90 Day Fiancé’s Stephanie and Erika

Stephanie admits she would avoid introducing her mom to anyone she has dated for only a few months, whatever gender they may be. She admits she tends to be jealous and insecure in relationships. Matto says she has to know someone for several months before even thinking of having sex. She has to feel she is “100 percent in the moment” before taking that step.

Stephanie was planning on coming out to her mom, but things got tricky when she found out Erika had hidden a serious and long-term relationship from her. She couldn’t understand why Erika didn’t tell her as they had both discussed their relationship failures. It turned out the woman in that particular relationship had kept Erika secret the whole time, hiding her bisexuality. By not coming out to her mom, Owens was scared Stephanie was going to do the same thing.

They had a huge fight over the fact Erika hadn’t told Stephanie about this relationship. Ultimately, this led to them breaking up and Stephanie heading back home to America. While Stephanie says she does still love Erika, their differences can never be resolved. Both ladies have since deleted the other from their social media accounts.

Now Stephanie is back home with her mom, 90 Day Fiancé fans hope she will eventually be able to come out and be truthful to her.
