Filming for the upcoming episodes is already underway, and they are set to premiere on Sunday, October 19, with streaming options available on Paramount+.
The Season Finale Featured An Explosive Bombshell
Just when viewers believed the mystery about Justin Hartley’s character Colter Shaw’s family couldn’t become any more intricate, the Season 2 finale delivered a shocking revelation about who actually murdered Colter’s father.
The showrunner of Tracker, Elwood Reid recently provided Collider with a lot of information on what to expect for Colter and the other characters. This includes Russell Shaw, played by Jensen Ackles — when the series comes back in two months.
No one saw that revelation coming, and obviously, everyone was shocked, especially Colter. Following is a quick refresher on the season two finale.
Otto Waldron Spilled

In the last moments of Season 2, Otto Waldron (Alex Fernandez) confessed to Colter that he was the one who pushed his father, Ashton Shaw (Lee Tergesen), off a cliff, leading to his death.
However, Otto wasn’t entirely acting alone, as he discloses that Colter’s mother, Mary Dove Shaw (Wendy Crewson), effectively urged him to do it.
Fans will recall that Colter returned to his hometown of Echo Ridge for the Season 2 finale, and it’s clear that all these tensions will escalate in Season 3. Reid mentioned: “Echo Ridge and the events surrounding Colter’s father are burdens he will carry for a long time.
This season, we emphasize that Colter continues to grapple with the deceptions his parents told him, especially his mother.
Mary Had Long Tried To Explain To Colter There Was Something Off With His Father

Colter’s mother had been trying for a long time to explain to him that something was wrong with his father and had also asked him not to investigate further.
Naturally, Colter will not listen to her advice, especially with what he knows now, which Reid hints will be significant in the Season 3 premiere.
“In the season opener, we raise several questions that will echo throughout the season. It’s not only about who killed his father, but also what caused his father to ‘lose it’.
In particular, what led Colter’s mother to believe she had to leave him to protect the kids and her own mental health. Colter will piece that together this season.”
Will There Be Flashbacks To Colter’s Childhood?
To piece together his childhood, the interviewer was curious if there would be flashback scenes in the new season. “We have talked about revisiting Colter’s past through flashbacks,” Reid shared, “but we haven’t yet found a satisfying way to do it.”
He assured that a lot of family trauma will be explored in the upcoming episodes, stating: “That doesn’t mean we won’t touch on the past this season.
One of the reasons Colter is such an enjoyable character to write is due to the grief and unresolved family matters he keeps inside. Justin portrays this so effectively, and we continuously discuss how to reveal parts of Colter’s troubled history.
Reid Enjoys Writing These Complicated Emotional Storylines
Reid notes writing for Justin is truly fulfilling. As I’ve mentioned before — much of his character isn’t fully expressed in the script — yet there are moments when Justin reveals a bit of what Colter is dealing with.
Justin accomplishes a lot with minimal input, and I’ve come to allow him the freedom to explore and discover those moments.
However, when we do provide insight into Colter’s character, we aim to make it significant while also offering the audience another small piece of what drives him.”
Regarding the “dark forces” he referred to earlier, Reid explained: We will uncover that Ashton and the Shaw family are surrounded by some dark forces.
Russell Shaw Returns
Tracker enthusiasts were thrilled to witness Ackles take on another intense role as a member of the Shaw family in the show’s inaugural season.
He has made occasional appearances in various episodes since then, but with his calendar getting busier due to his Prime Video endeavors we were eager to find out when we could see his return as Russell on Tracker.
As always, Reid was forthcoming, stating: “Jensen fans are in for a treat this season, and I won’t keep you waiting. I enjoy writing for Jensen, and I believe that whenever he and Justin share the screen, it just clicks.
Reid Continued, Talking About Ackles
Reid continued talking about Ackles: “He’s incredibly occupied, and I have to negotiate with him to appear on the show.
However, I believe he plays a crucial role in Colter’s narrative and can provide the audience with a different viewpoint on their upbringing. Moreover, the chemistry between the two of them is fantastic.”
As a big fan of Ackles just like the rest of us, Reid commented, “I’ll take as much Ackles as possible,” before playfully signing off and teasing us with “Spin-off ;).” Tracker is set to return to CBS for its third season on October 19.
