Will ‘Doctor Who’ Have a Surprise Christmas Special?

The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker)

Fans are wondering if Doctor Who will have a 2019 Christmas special after the season ends. Rumors are swirling that such a special could be in the works. It would be the perfect ending to Jodie Whittaker’s big debut. Christmas specials have become an important part of the Doctor Who series ever since the science fiction series was given new life in 2005.

For 12 consecutive years, Britain’s favorite Time Lord took the time to celebrate the holiday season with iconic episodes such as “The Time of the Doctor” and “The Runaway Bride.” There was also a 2010 New Years Day special during David Tennant’s time as the Time Lord. While there wasn’t a Christmas special last year, Jodie Whittaker’s appearance in “Resolution” was festive enough. However, the episode appeared on New Year’s Day instead of during the Christmas season.

However, there is currently no Doctor Who Christmas special for the 2020 holiday season. It would be awful if the British series skipped the holidays once again. It would also be a first in the Doctor Who franchise since its modern reboot began. It would also be unusual to air 11 episodes instead of the usual 12 episodes.

But that doesn’t mean it’s out of the question yet. As the holiday season approaches, rumors are indicating that there could be a Doctor Who Christmas special lined up for the 2019 holiday television season. Since filming for the series is currently underway, the cast could still have time to shoot a Christmas or New Year episode while keeping it a secret. This would be a great surprise for fans of Doctor Who.

These rumors first emerged on the Doctor Who’s official social media accounts, which continues to tease a big reveal. However, it would be strange for Doctor Who to release a Christmas episode without any teasers or trailers. But it would be a smart marketing strategy after following the success of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. While Whittaker’s role lead to mixed divide among the fandom, many loved seeing a female version. Others were concerned about the show straying from its original format.

But a 2019 Doctor Who Christmas special is exactly what the fans need. It could take the fans’ minds off the increased divide and political correctness criticism. There’s little time left for them to film such a special since there are so many weeks left this year. With or without a Christmas special, viewers are still willing to watch the show with a fresh perspective.
