Yellowstone: Kelly Reilly Reveals How Beth Dutton Became Fan Favorite

Yellowstone Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly began her reign on the popular drama with a challenge. Could the actress turn her character of Beth Dutton into a memorable figure? Reilly didn’t just meet that challenge. Since the first season, Kelly’s character has become a fan favorite.

Find out what Reilly just shared about her experience working on Yellowstone. And don’t miss her insights about Beth Dutton’s past and future below.

Yellowstone – Star Kelly Reilly Reflects On Her Character Beth Dutton

Beth Dutton stole the Yellowstone season 4 finale spotlight by ending up with “the darkest thing she’s ever done,” the actress who portrays her, Kelly Reilly, pointed out to Esquire. And describing Beth as a newlywed doesn’t do justice to what lies beneath the surface of this character. Did someone mention blackmail?!

Looking back on season 4, Kelly believes that Beth’s story arc slowly soared toward what some viewers thought an unthinkable conclusion. But Reilly insists that Beth did not go too far in choosing her path. What lies ahead for the character in season 5? Kelly offered some clues by analyzing the past.

The Yellowstone star feels that Beth views attacks on her family “like a red rag to a bull, right? I think Kayce has a more peaceful soul than Beth. I don’t think he’s going to go on the forefront until he’s attacked himself. Whereas Beth? I think you can just feel the fire burning in her the whole time.”

For instance, Beth tries but fails to comprehend why her father shows no desire to destroy those individuals. “She cannot understand why her father is not wanting to destroy these people. I do think it grew throughout the season. When she’s walking into that prison [to visit Riggins], I think she thinks she’s going to kill them, right? And it’s going to ruin her life to do it.”

And Reilly warned that Beth uses words quite literally. “I do believe everything she says. When she says, “I will die on the wall that is protecting my father.” She means it,” summed up the actress. “When John is like, “No, Beth, that was way too much”—I think that was a trigger point where she’s just not able to be the assigned soldier and play nice.”

Yellowstone – How ‘Ferocious’ Beth Dutton Became A Fan Favorite

Yellowstone often turns into a situation where good fights evil. But Beth Dutton doesn’t make her decisions based on morality, pointed out Kelly. “She finds it impossible to toe the line in that way, which is what makes her so ferocious,” added the actress. As a result, “she is willing to do something that I don’t think any other characters are willing to do, which is destroy herself. It’s sort of Machiavellian. But I don’t think she’s doing it for the greater good; she’s just doing it for vengeance.”

And while a vengeful woman might not sound like a candidate for Most Popular Yellowstone Character, Beth Dutton has definitely become a fan favorite. Reilly revealed her views on that phenomenon. “In a way, we get to live out this fantasy with Beth,” pointed out the actress. “She says and does things that we would never dream or dare to do.”

As a result, Kelly views Beth as comparable to a cat with nine lives. “She should never have survived that bomb. She’s like a little superhero without the cape; she’s just never going to die until she’s probably an old lady, hopefully peacefully.”

And the actress believes that Yellowstone viewers chose Beth as a fan favorite because many feel “empowered by her. There is a primal thing that Beth kind of touches on, which I think is what makes her such a unique character. I love that stuff.”
