The spinoff series of Z Nation has been renewed. The zombie apocalypse has found new life on Netflix. The streaming platform has ordered a second season of Black Summer, a spinoff of the Z Nation series that previously aired on Syfy. Similar to the first season, which debuted back in April on Netflix, Season 2 will only run for eight episodes. Production is expected to start next year in Canada. However, a premiere date hasn’t been announced.
Black Summer stars Jaime King who’s also a producer on the series, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She plays the role of Rose, a mom who’s separated from her daughter during the zombie apocalypse. Rose will go to great lengths to find her daughter. Her search finds her among a group of refugees as she tries to tackle this strange new world. Of course, King will be returning to the series as the lead. Other returning actors for Season 2 include Christine Lee and Justin Chu Cary. Other cast members will be announced overtime.
Netflix first ordered the spinoff in summer 2018. The decision was made before Z Nation ended its fifth and final season on Syfy. The cable network was the one who pulled the plug on the show, according to The Asylum, a production company behind Sharknado. Season 2 of Black Summer will be produced by Netflix Studio. Karl Schaefer and John Hyams serve as the creators behind the show, while Abram Cox is the executive producer. Hyams will continue as showrunner for Season 2.
The news of Black Summer being renewed on Netflix shows that the streaming service wants to go in a different direction. Some of its most popular series include Daybreak, Stranger Things, The Haunting, and The Witcher. It shows that the streaming service wants to focus more on their fantasy and sci-fi content. I’ve watched the first 2 episodes of this show from Season 1 and can’t really see the relationship to Z Nation which I loved. I will watch the rest of them but not sure about another season. I will leave that decision until later.
