A lot of daytime television fans were hoping that it wouldn’t come to this, but unfortunately It just did. There are new reports that say both DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse have decided to drop the CBS network from their channel line-up in what many people are calling a very controversial move. Here’s what you need to know.
CBS In The Black
According to reports, The Young and the Restless fans and The Bold and the Beautiful fans who have either DirecTV or AT&T U-Verse are their cable network provider sadly won’t be able to tune in to their favorite soaps any longer. Even though many fans and viewers petitioned to keep CBS in their lineup, both companies have decided to pull the plug on the network.
“CBS has put our customers into the middle of its negotiations by pulling its local CBS stations in 14 cities,” said AT&T in a statement. “We were willing to continue to negotiate and also offered to pay CBS an unprecedented rate increase. That increase would present CBS the highest fee we currently pay to any major broadcast network group, despite the fact that CBS stations are available free over the air.”
No Deal Reached
The affected networks include: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Seattle, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. The 7-year contract expired on July 19 and because the parties involved could not come up with a deal with new terms, AT&T and its DirecTV, DirecTV Now and U-Verse pay-TV platforms have decided to get rid of CBS and all of its related television stations including CBSN, CBS Sports and The Smithsonian Channel.
CBS reportedly costs DirecTV around $2 per month per subscriber but according to DirecTV, is nowhere close to today’s fair market terms for content.
While the summer season is usually a slow one when it comes to ratings, the move comes at a time when many television viewers and fans are abandoning their cable television deals for streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime instead. All three rely on just a broadband connection and come at a fraction of the price of what many cable providers charge.
