After Audra Charles (Zuleyka Silver) told Victor and Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) about Tucker McCall’s (Trevor St. John) scandal. After Victor learned Adam’s part in the blackmail, he was furious.

After Adam stormed out, Victor told Nikki that his son was a very troubled young man. So, that provides the explanation as to why Victor treats Adam differently from the others. It also explains why Victor refuses to give up on Adam.
As for Nick, Victor’s challenge might have something to do with keeping a closer eye on Adam.
