The Y&R star felt the need to divulge some health-related news and spread awareness, so let’s look at what she had to say.
“I wanted to share that in late January I was diagnosed with Coronary heart disease,” Egan confirmed. “Thanks to early detection, and medicine, I will be okay! I’m a private person, but this seemed TOO IMPORTANT NOT TO SHARE. Especially for women.”
As for how Melissa Claire Egan discovered this diagnosis, it started with a trip to her longtime doctor and some suspicious bloodwork that raised red flags.
Egan was referred to a cardiologist, who ordered a heart calcium scan and determined that plaque was in her LAD artery. The Y&R actress elaborated on that and spelled out how catastrophic this could’ve been if it weren’t for early detection.
”It’s mild so far and tends to be genetic, but rare for a 44 year old woman. This could have caused the plaque to chip off and cause a fatal heart attack or stroke any time over the next 5-10 years, maybe even sooner,” Egan revealed.
Although Egan expressed her gratitude to God and her medical team, she also acknowledged that other people don’t always know about this condition until it’s far more serious.

“But I couldn’t stop thinking about all the other women(and men) that might have this disease and not know it. It is under-tested and under-recognized,” Egan said.
Egan suggested that many women remember to get their yearly mammograms, but heart health isn’t always at the top of everyone’s checklist. That’s why Egan wanted to offer a reminder to fans about checking their heart health.
“It is imperative that you do! Cardiovascular disease is the Number 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. Tell your doctor you want to be evaluated for coronary heart disease risk,” Egan urged.
As Egan wrapped things up, she pushed everyone to have their doc check for “Lipoprotein(a) and ApoB levels” in particular. Egan also said that a heart calcium scan was a must and ultimately left fans with a message of hope.
“Let’s all band together, focus on our heart health, and live longer!!!” Egan insisted before adding an emoji heart.
