The Young And The Restless – Noemi Gonzales Pens Essay

ET published an essay written by the Y&R alum about how she is redefining beauty standards in Hollywood. She admits that she might have lost jobs over it, but she was going to stay true to herself.

Gonzales recalls when she landed the role of Mia on the iconic soap opera. While she is thankful for the opportunity, she went through a difficult time. Sometimes, misery wants company. Other times, people can forget that actors are people just like you and me.

The Young And The Restless Spoilers – The Effect of Social Media

The public ridiculing and bashing had an effect on The Young and the Restless alum. She wrote, “I loved Mia. I would play her again, but only if I time-traveled to the ‘80s when there were no social media. Because what I do not miss about portraying Mia is being bashed and ridiculed publicly for not being skinny, manufactured, or white enough for the soap opera demographic.”

Gonzales continued, “I began to second-guess my self-love, body shape, and what I found to be beautiful about myself. I was shaken. I stayed quiet. I kept my head down, stayed in the work. It was a very challenging time. But I am thankful for the growth, experience, and the fans I have gained who knew I did it all for them.”

Y&R Spoilers – Selena: Public Transformation With Grace

The same week that Gonzales wrapped up her stint on The Young and the Restless, she auditioned and landed a role in Selena: The Series. She had to go through a physical transformation to play the part of Suzette Quintanilla. Her long hair was cut off, which removed her security blanket. She had to gain weight, which ended up making her feel liberated.

I have a theory that because I was already aware of society’s unrealistic beauty expectations, my transformation was a journey of more self-love…I began receiving more compliments than I expected and overt praise with how I was handling such a drastic transformation with grace… it was the trifecta of my conscious learning, my decision to feel beautiful, but more than anything, it was my stance for personal fulfillment that has me feeling authentic, real, and satisfied.”

Not her character no I don't. She's a lot prettier without her face all painted up.

No I don't miss her character and was glad when she left. That said, I appreciate the fact that they Y&R hires people not based on size but on actions. She played the roll very well. Nobody has a right to bully people because they don't fit the mold. Just shows how many stupid, jealous people there are out there.
