Adam (as now played by Mark Grossman) will be coming back to Genoa City on ‘The Young and the Restless’. But will Y&R address the face-shift from Justin Hartley to Mark Grossman?
Devoted viewers recall that Michael Muhney (Adam) and Billy Miller’s (Billy) farewell scene in January 2014, led two different ways. Billy escaped and transformed into David Tom.
Adam was shown crawling out of the fabled black SUV and away from the crash. Justin Hartley debuted in the fall of 2014 as the recast Adam. He, like Muhney, then delivered a well-received run as Victor Junior before his Adam apparently died in September 2016.
Y&R last chose to bring Adam back via radical facial surgery. Of course, Adam also had a new body and voice that fell into the suspension of disbelief category, where all escapist entertainment slots.
Will backstage decision-makers develop another surgery storyline, where Adam’s latest appearance change is highlighted, meaning that his face was burned so badly that he again needed restorative work?
As has been true in many past recast instances, a voice-over announcement could be made, “The role of Adam Newman is now being played by Mark Grossman.”, and that would be that. But a lack of explanation would likely require Y&R to claim that Adam escaped the cabin explosion.
No mortal could have lived through Chloe’s (Elizabeth Hendrickson) diabolical plan to eliminate her enemy. So, a story could be developed that allowed him to escape, or for someone to have pulled the seemingly unconscious man out of the cabin before it blew up.

Adam either was in the blast, or he wasn’t. In either case, Y&R can directly address the recast that has allowed Grossman to take over for Hartley. This plot decision impacts the comeback storyline, which is why it’s important.
