No, Ashland was not attempting to pull another scam when he admitted to lying about cancer and wanting to use Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) half-billion-dollar payoff to start a new life with his now annulled wife.

Victoria Newman Locke (Amelia Heinle) could not shut her emotions off instantaneously. But she kept herself together long enough to convince Ashland to agree to leave the company and sign the annulment agreement.

Later, Victoria was distraught as she drove her luxury vehicle on the outskirts of Genoa City, Wisconsin. Heavy fog made visibility challenging.

Then, while on a hands-free call with her mother, Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), Victoria turned sharply to avoid the oncoming car that was driven by Rey Rosales (Jordi Vilasuso).

Rey did not survive the crash. According to Ashland, Victoria swerved her car, with Ashland’s following behind hers, and Rey plowed into him.

Victoria’s car caught on fire, and Ashland pulled her out and took her to safety. Ashland confirmed that Rey was dead and relayed that information to Victoria.

The shocking end of Rey’s life happened because TPTB decided to opt out of the three-year contract Vilasuso signed last fall, with the soap industry-standard six-month interval period being triggered.

When pressed for details last year, Ashland (as then played by Richard Burgi), whose real name is Bobby DeFranco, admitted he stole his best friend’s identification and assumed the Ashland Locke identity.

It is fully soapy that Ashland happened to have an opportunity to revisit a car crash scenario, where his just-annulled wife was caught in a burning vehicle. Learning from the past and inspired by Victoria’s love, Ashland pulled her out of the fire and saved her life.

Gratitude will likely be fleeting, as Victoria never would have been driving on that road and in that frame of mind. All that Ashland did led to her being in that fated crash.

The Young And The Restless Spoilers – Couple Survives Or Dies?

Could Victoria come to trust Ashland again someday? Maybe.

The best-case outcome will not happen if Newman is written out of the show, with teasers indicating Ashland could be targeted for a revenge murder.

Hopefully, that prediction is not realized, as Newman is a great actor, and there is more story to be mined between Ashland and Victoria.
