The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) has been moving in Billy Abbott’s (Jason Thompson) direction for a while. He was still committed to Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) when Chelsea first felt drawn back to Billy.

Devoted viewers recall Chelsea and Billy’s backstory is messy. Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) once used her to trap Billy (then played by Billy Miller). That storyline served as Egan’s entrance to the show.

That was one of Victor’s brazen moments where his so-called paternal instincts were concerned. The fans recognized that the mining of that old storyline was intended to impact the current characters’ lives in meaningful ways.

Chelsea continues to go through a recovery process. That followed her recent severe depression and the need for medical treatment.

Billy’s profound intervention saved Chelsea. Egan delivered some of the best performances of her Y&R tenure through a storyline that built toward Billy pulling Chelsea back from a Grand Phoenix rooftop ledge.

Chelsea later reclaimed mental stability and, in addition to continuing to offer Billy gratitude, she apologized for the circumstances of their son Johnny Abbott’s (Paxton Mishkind) birth.

Johnny was conceived as part of Victor’s plan to use Chelsea to split Billy from Victoria Newman Abbott (Amelia Heinle), at that time in the plot.

Victoria was the great love of Billy’s life for many years. But the writing staff changed the trajectory of Thompson’s character.

Billy’s decision to leave Victoria, rather than have Heinle’s character dump him, was inspired. His move to Lily went along with the continuity of both characters’ linked backstories and the spaces where they were currently living.

It was debatable to have Lily recognized Billy’s drift to Chelsea. While believable, Khalil and Thompson had great chemistry. But Michael Graziadei’s (Daniel Romalotti) return was in the works. So, everything makes sense in retrospect.

Chelsea wanted to try a reunion with her great love, Adam Newman (Mark Grossman). Thankfully, he made a rare wise relationship decision and told Chelsea no because of their repeated pattern of dysfunction. It was the right call, as Chelsea now agrees.
