Newman, who some longtime soap waters may recall played Josh Lewis on The Guiding Light, was surprised to get the call from The Young and The Restless to take over the role. The Guiding Light was one of the first CBS soaps to fall, followed shortly by As The World Turns, leaving The Young and The Restless and its sister soap The Bold and The Beautiful as the remaining survivors.

Y&R Spoilers And Updates – Robert Newman Had To Get Used To Soap Opera Acting Again

Newman notes that although he has kept busy over the years with Broadway plays and such, The Young and The Restless is the first soap he has been on since The Guiding Light’s cancellation. In order to prepare for assuming the role of Ashland Locke, Newman had several zoom meetings with The Young and The Restless’ head writer and co-producer Josh Griffith and Tony Morina, executive producer. One thing Newman determined to do was not play a copy of Burgi’s Ashland, and opted to focus very closely on Locke’s relationship with Victoria Newman-Locke (Amelia Heinle). Newman chose to make Locke his own character afresh, and allowed the producers to veto his choice, but much to his delight they didn’t, and viewers will see that his idea works well.

Y&R Spoilers And Updates – Robert Newman Had A Case Of Nerves His First Day, But Felt Welcomed By Coworkers

Newman also notes he hit it off with his onscreen wife Amelia Heinle, and adores her; he thinks she’s terrific and generous and patient. He knows there will be some fans who have a difficult time adjusting to his recast character, but he hopes they will warm up to his version of Ashland Locke in good time.
