The spoilers and updates for The Young and the Restless indicate that many viewers were taken aback by the amnesia twist involving Matt Clark (Roger Howarth).
This development effectively turned Matt into a blank slate, as he was unable to recall his identity or the terrible deeds he had committed.
Matt Remembered The Monstrous Actions Of His Past-He Was Appalled
However, everything shifted in the episode aired on June 2, when Matt finally remembered the monstrous actions of his past.
Yet, another surprise unfolded when it became clear that Matt was genuinely appalled by his history, rather than reverting to the malevolent character that the Newmans had anticipated.
Y&R Head Writer Josh Griffith shared insights with SOD regarding the unexpected turns Matt has been experiencing and the reasons behind them.
Ultimately, it all comes down to Griffith’s intention to keep Roger Howarth on the show, which would be impossible if Matt remained entirely evil. From the moment Howarth joined the cast, Griffith was keen to ensure his continued presence.
Griffith Was Captivated By Roger Howarth’s Skills
Like many viewers, Griffith was captivated by Howarth’s skills and realized he needed to tone down Matt’s malevolent traits to keep the actor engaged.
“I thought, ‘This guy is incredibly talented, and Matt is so wicked! If he remains this evil, his time on screen will be limited,'” Griffith remarked. This led Griffith to contemplate how he could reshape Matt, even though Matt can never completely escape his vile history in the eyes of some adversaries.
“How can we reinvent him so that he remains a potential threat and danger to those around him, yet also redeem him from the atrocious acts he has committed in the past?” Griffith confessed he brainstormed about Matt.
Griffith Began With Matt’s Amnesia, Then Progressed To Recollection And Regret
Griffith began with Matt’s amnesia, then progressed to the phases of recollection and regret-if anyone can pull this redemption off, Roger can, he’s done it before on General Hospital.
Matt is eager to somehow rectify his wrongs, which is a vital aspect of the redemption journey Griffith envisions. Griffith emphasized that Matt’s atonement is essential for him to genuinely redeem himself.
If Matt can sincerely make reparations through his deeds, Griffith indeed perceives a route to redemption for him.
“If he can remember but not revert to that person-if he can recall but also atone- then he certainly has a future on the canvas,” Griffith reassured fans.
