The Young And The Restless Spoilers: Sharon's Dangerous Gamble – Matt's Twisted Romantic Agenda?

The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) gambled that Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) has unresolved issues with him. He anticipated that she would be willing to talk things out rather than say goodbye forever.

So, the man who longtime viewers know attacked Sharon all those years ago has gotten her to agree to be his therapist.

Yes, she conditioned her acceptance of his offer, but nevertheless, she is going along with his incredible request.

Fans are being asked to suspend disbelief because any licensed therapist would have a serious conflict of interest in this instance.

How could Sharon be unbiased in helping a patient who committed a crime against her?

Reverse the circumstances and ask if Matt would be willing to have Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) as his counselor.

Key Takeaways

  • Sharon agrees to counsel Matt.
  • Nick fears another dangerous deception.
  • Matt’s violent past resurfaces.
  • Sharon takes an enormous personal risk.
  • Could Matt still have romantic feelings?

Three Decades Ago in Genoa City, Wisconsin

One of the darker storylines that The Young and the Restless explored in the 1990s happened after two new characters were introduced as part of the SORAS’ing (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome) of Nick.

Morrow became the recast who portrayed a returned Nick from boarding school.

He met Sharon Collins, her maiden name, who lived in the nearby town of Madison, Wisconsin.

A boyfriend, Matt (originally played by Eddie Cibrian), became violent and physically attacked her, which established the rivalry with Nick.

Matt’s conflict with Nick exploded when Morrow’s character asked Sharon to marry him.

After Matt wronged her, he was later found shot and presumed dead. Nick was arrested and jailed.

It was later revealed that Amy Wilson (Julianne Morris), who was involved with Matt and Nick, shot the character Cibrian played at the time.

She did that because Matt had attacked her, as he had Sharon.

Amy told the authorities what happened, and Nick was freed.

As longtime viewers know, Nick’s history with Matt continues to affect his life decades later.

Matt Clark’s First Revenge Attempt Failed

Fans remember that Rick Hearst became the Matt recast in the year 2000.

He took over for Russell Lawrence, whose run on the show was short.

Hearst’s version of this character had plastic surgery as part of the intentionally disguised identity he called Carter Mills.

Matt tried to attack Sharon again and thankfully didn’t achieve that demented goal.

He also tried to frame Nick for his murder by pulling a breathing tube out of his throat after being in a car crash.

Nick beat that rap as well.

The audience hadn’t seen Matt in nearly a quarter-century until Howarth became the most recent recast, using the alias Mitch Bacall.

Since Matt’s return, the character has continued to struggle with his past.

As earlier spoilers explored, Matt’s dangerous behavior has already threatened Nick and Sharon again.

Sharon Newman Takes Enormous Risk

Sharon told Nick that Matt’s idea offers them a unique opportunity.

She believes that if Matt goes to the clinic and she can help him overcome his troubles, they might solve this issue that’s haunted them for years.

Nick is totally opposed to Sharon’s involvement. He’s convinced that Matt is conning her and isn’t being honest.

In fact, Sharon’s decision to help Matt has already raised serious concerns about her safety.

Viewers know that Matt is fighting a split personality, with the bad-guy element of his personality attempting to suppress the good guy he genuinely wants to become.

Credit to the writing staff for extending this storyline past the limit of where the backstory could have gone.

This fresh story has already produced numerous great scenes, and more appear to be ahead, with Matt willingly getting Sharon to go one-on-one with him.

That begs a question.

Does the good Matt believe he might be able to romantically reconcile with Sharon?

Annemarie’s Take

I think Sharon is making an enormous mistake by agreeing to become Matt’s therapist.

I understand that she wants to help him, and maybe she genuinely believes there’s a decent person somewhere inside him.

But this is the same man who terrorized her years ago. That history doesn’t simply disappear because Matt claims he wants to change.

And Nick has every reason to be worried.

What makes this storyline interesting is that Matt appears to be struggling with two very different sides of himself. Roger Howarth has certainly been given plenty to work with.

Still, I can’t imagine Sharon being able to maintain any kind of professional distance from someone who caused her so much pain.

And if Matt is secretly hoping to rekindle a romance with Sharon, that could make this situation even more disturbing.

Do you think Matt genuinely wants Sharon’s help, or is he manipulating her because he still has romantic feelings for her?
