Gina Tognoni, like Stafford, is a great actor. Tognoni’s version of Phyllis has been purposely written and portrayed much differently than Stafford’s edition was. While it’s not this simple, ‘Red’ was bad while new Phyllis is quirky. However, many fans find both views of this classic character to be engaging.
Y&R signed Stafford as a contract player due to the great impression she made during what was supposed to be a limited run for the then-side character. Phyllis went on to repeatedly disrupt Danny’s (Michael Damian) life, run down ‘Cricket’ (Lauralee Bell) and Paul (Doug Davidson), otherwise known as ‘Pristine’, and split ‘Shick’ by taking Nick (Joshua Morrow) from Sharon (Sharon Case) after Cassie (Camryn Grimes) died.
Devoted viewers recall that ‘Phick’ (Phyllis and Nick) then produced Summer, who was eventually SORAS’d into the character King came to play starting in 2012. She remained a part of the cast during the past two years, without making an appearance, while being part of CBS’ nighttime comedy ‘Life in Pieces’. That sitcom’s filming schedule and mid-season replacement start is allowing King to be on Y&R now.
Summer’s return to Genoa City was unexpected. Her parents and other family members are happy to see her, but surprised that she was arrested for Grand Theft Auto. Kyle (played by the just-recast Michael Mealor) tagged her as trouble and has been side-stepping his former girlfriend.

King’s return adds pizzazz to various storylines, as intended. Summer has surely spiced things up since arriving. Her unusual overture to Billy (Jason Thompson) could lead to more, but might just be immature flirting. Phyllis surely will explode if she learns what’s already been said and would surely stop ‘Philly’ if anything develops between King’s character and Thompson’s.
