Y&R spoilers reveal that once upon a time, Jack was addicted to painkillers. He was introduced to them during recovery from a gunshot wound and then became addicted to them.
This explains why Lauren Fenmore (Tracey E. Bregman) believed he’d be such a good fit as Nikki’s sponsor.
He not only cares for her but also understands her plight, as someone who has had substance abuse issues in the past.

Plus, Jack’s in a very good place right now, and a relapse is very unlikely – or so everyone thinks. With all that “could” happen, and being in Nikki’s orbit right now, a relapse may not be as “unlikely” as everyone thinks.

With Jordan’s (Colleen Zenk) facility going up in flames and confirmed prisoner escapes, it won’t be long before Nikki’s nemesis comes knocking. What if Jack gets tangled up in trying to save Ms. Newman from this psychopath? What if he gets hurt or shot again?
The pain, stress, and trauma may have him reaching for pills. Then again, as Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John) is still hovering, looking to ruin the Abbott family, so could Jack find out that Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) really was working with McCall to take over Jabot?

What if he finds out Diane Abbott (Susan Walters) knew about it and did nothing? He might believe his entire marriage and family is all a lie.
At the end of the day, anyone is susceptible to a relapse, but if Jack suffers one, regardless of the circumstances behind it, Nikki will feel responsible.
