Billy Abbott’s (Jason Thompson) marriage proposal isn’t surprising on the Young and the Restless. Neither is Victoria Newman’s (Amelia Heinle) seeming acceptance of it. But what comes next will surprise both characters and the audience.

A Villy reboot has been teased for awhile on Y&R. Billy and Vickie were written into each other’s regular plot paths months ago.

Yes, there was the Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard) scare, when he and Victoria kissed more than once. But that didn’t go anywhere either because of the backstage head writer change and writing staff adjustments, or because a Vane pairing was never in the plans.

The intrigue in this version of Villy’s love story involves Billy being the responsible one. Heinle is playing the off-course, Billy-esque role.

Having Thompson’s alter ego be the stand-up guy, who’s all about the kids and repeatedly looking to reel Vickie in, was a nice play against this couple’s type. It was also more reflective of reality, as many readers likely agree.

In many relationships, be they on daytime or on the other side of the screen, caring loved ones often swap roles or take on different responsibilities as time moves forward.

Y&R’s current version of fictional reality has humanized Vickie, taking her beyond the Ice Princess stereotype and advancing Billy past his irredeemably flawed state. It makes complete sense that Vickie would be broken after the J.T. Hellstrom (Thad Luckinbill) arc, especially since that daytime tome lasted more than a year, and that Billy would be there for the woman he’s never stopped loving.

Having Billy face his former demon, gambling, in Las Vegas, Nevada, was a smart touch, reinforcing what the story-boarder’s are apparently doing. Also, Vickie’s acceptance of the latest proposal won’t immediately lead to a full-blown Villy reunion, as new issues, not related to the couple, will prove to be distractions.

Here’s hoping that Y&R does allow Vickie and Billy to remarry. Why not give this particular actor pairing, Heinle and Thompson, a chance to collaborate after legit nuptials are written in? There’s no reason not to and fans of Villy in all its forms have also been patient for long enough.
