Cole Hauser Believes His ‘Yellowstone’ Character’s Reaction To John Dutton’s Death Is The Right One

John Dutton’s death hit both ‘Yellowstone’s’ characters and the fandom like a heavy blow to the head, but according to Cole Hauser, his character Rip Wheeler handled the patriarch’s death with grace. Here’s what he means by it.

The death of John Dutton sent the ‘Yellowstone’ fandom reeling, more so because he was killed by a hitman – though, for some time, the characters thought he died by suicide.

Dutton’s death came at the height of great tension surrounding the Dutton family inheritance, aka the ‘Yellowstone’ ranch, and this further led to more conflict.

The family was plunged into grief and greediness, but one character amazingly rose up above the challenges, and that was Hauser’s Rip Wheeler.

For one thing, he doesn’t let anything distract him from his mission to fulfill the late Montana governor’s wishes for his family’s impressive ranch.

Wheeler is doing more than enough for the Dutton family during this crisis, and considering that he’s only an in-law, Cole Hauser believes he deserves some recognition for his good works.

During his latest chat with PEOPLE, Hauser revealed that his character will not stop being a total sweetheart to his wife, Beth Dutton, and that he will continue to be “100%” committed to helping “to figure out the best way forward.”

“That’s what John Dutton would want. That’s what he’s been taught throughout his life,” he further teased.

It took two years for ‘Yellowstone’ to return with its two-part second season, and so far, it’s been one nerve-wracking drama after another.

Think the first episode of season 5B introducing us to Kevin Costner’s John Dutton’s death. Even though the departure of Costner has been announced a year in advance, the death of his iconic ‘Yellowstone’ character still came as a shock.

Hauser also teased that there’s going to be a harsher climate going forward. Thankfully, his character is not one that’s easily broken.
