Boston Blue spoilers and updates reveal Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg answers the question if the flagship show stars will appear in the spinoff. Let’s see what Donnie has to say about the matter, as fans have been asking.
The Spinoff Is Set For The 2025-2026 Season
Donnie Wahlberg expresses his thrill about filming Boston Blue in Boston and hints at possible appearances by familiar faces from Blue Bloods.
CBS announced a Blue Bloods spinoff for the 2025-26 TV season, focusing on Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) who moves to Boston to join the local police.
The show will feature Danny partnered with Det. Lena Peters (not cast yet), who is also from a notable law enforcement family.
Wahlberg teased about some guest stars when asked on the Morning Magic podcast, saying the Reagans are just a phone call away, hinting at their possible involvement in the new series. He also said Danny likes to talk on the phone a lot, but that’s all he would say about it!
Donnie Can’t Divulge Much At This Time
He expressed, “I can’t share too many details at this moment, but I feel truly honored to be producing the show alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and the talented duo known as the Brandons. It’s a privilege to uphold the legacy of Blue Bloods, and I believe that’s my mission with this project.”
The Brandons he mentions are Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, writers and producers who have collaborated on several series, such as Alert: Missing Persons Unit, S.W.A.T., L.A.’s Finest, and The Blacklist.
Of course, Bruckheimer is the talent behind all of the CSI shows that were on the air for so many years, as well as many other procedurals.
The Show Started As Another Series Idea
As reported by Deadline, the screenplay for Boston Blue originated from a series titled Jamaica Plain, named after a Boston neighborhood.
This series aimed to depict a law enforcement family in Boston, focusing on their eldest daughter (Peters) who partners with a transfer from Los Angeles.
With CBS prioritizing the expansion of the Blue Bloods universe, executives saw an opportunity to transform Jamaica Plain into a spinoff, particularly due to Wahlberg’s strong connections to Boston, his hometown.
During a podcast, Wahlberg revealed that he initially had reservations about the spinoff, but once the creators mentioned it would be set in Boston and filmed there, he was fully on board. He then talked about what it’s like to be a Bostonian and living there.
Donnie Was Absolutely Thrilled
CBS suggested a follow-up to Blue Bloods, a spinoff-I thought about it and said maybe; then they asked if it would be set in Boston, and I was thrilled! I love filming in my hometown; it’s important to remember where you come from, and as a proud Bostonian, I cherish every visit.
Wahlberg humorously noted that he can’t go anywhere without someone claiming a family connection, as of course he’s highly recognizable. I attend a game or something similar, and people say, ‘Donnie! I’m your aunt’s cousin’s niece’s nephew’s cousin-do you remember me?’
In Boston, everyone is just one connection away, so you need to keep it in your heart and mind that you’re from Boston, as no one will let you forget it,’ Wahlberg mentioned.
