Ellen Pompeo Discusses Life After Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen PompeoEllen Pompeo is currently not predicting a lot of acting roles in her future, especially after she’s done filming Grey’s Anatomy. The 51-year-old actress explained that an acting career is no longer appealing to her and that she’s enthusiastic about using her talents and brain in a different way. Here’s what one of the world’s highest paid actresses has to say about the downsides of having a great acting career.

Ellen Pompeo Says She Has “No Desire” To Keep Acting After Grey’s Anatomy

The actress, who portrays Meredith Grey on the hit TV series Grey’s Anatomy, is already planning her life after the long-running ABC medical drama ends. Pompeo rocketed to fame in 2005 when she landed the role to play Grey’s Anatomy’s titular and lead character.

While the star freely admitted that she has no desire to continue acting, she did assure fans that it’s not a final decision and we might yet see her back to her old tricks: stealing our hearts one character at a time. For now, the star of Daredevil wants to expand her resume and see what new ventures life has in stock for her.

“I’m not saying I’ll never act again. I very well may, but I’m not super excited about continuing my acting career,” Ellen said on the July 27th episode of the Ladies First with Laura Brown podcast. “I’m more entrepreneurial at this stage. I’m excited about investing in businesses, and starting [a] business. That’s an area of growth that I’m excited about, using my brain in a different way.”

Pompeo went on to describe the unglamorous side of having a successful acting career and why she feels that her acting road should come to an end.

“Sitting around in trailers, traveling around, shooting this in Atlanta, shooting that in Vancouver,” she explained, “I have no desire to go sit in trailers at 11 at night and wait to shoot scenes and have AD’s knock on my door and tell me when I can eat lunch. It’s for the young at heart. It’s for the youth!”

Ellen Pompeo On Why She Didn’t Take On Multiple Jobs As A Younger Actress

Ellen Pompeo also opened up about why her acting roles were limited and why she clung to one role for a long time.

“When I was in my 30s, I absolutely saw myself as in a box. That’s why I stayed on the show because I said, ‘Holy s–t. By the time I can negotiate my contract again and get out of this, I’m going to be almost 40 years old. I am super typecast in this role. I am 40, so I’m never going to work again,'” she explained. “Even 15 years ago, the thought of being 40 was, like, you’re over as an actress.”

Present-day Ellen Pompeo has no such fears and she’s definitely done holding herself back. The actress is now enthusiastically looking forward to the future and hoping for the opening of greater opportunities. “Now that I’m 50, I don’t see myself that way at all,” she noted. “I think…that I can do whatever I want or I can do nothing at all, quite honestly.”

In fact, she’s already in the process of launching an exciting new project: Her very own podcast, Tell Me.

“[I thought], ‘Let me go out there and do something I’ve never done before and try something completely different for absolutely no other reason than to try something different because I haven’t for so long,'” the Station 19 actress shared. “If it fails, it fails, but at least I’m trying something new.”
