The cast recently reunited for a Web show, getting fans like us buzzing over the possibility of a primetime return of the beloved ER.
Do New Amsterdam, The Resident, The Good Doctor, and other medical primetime TV dramas need to beware? Find out the answer below!
Inside The ER Reunion – George Clooney Delights Web Show Viewers With Return!
Years ago, primetime TV viewers watched TV history in the making on ER. The fictional County General housed newly graduated medical students, budding residents, experienced surgeons, and budget-slashing administrators. Sounds like nothing special, right?
But it was the acting coupled with the plots that made ER must-see TV. The result? When fans learned that a Web reunion with the top stars of the show would take place, they gathered around their laptops and computers to watch. And the show did not disappoint.
Held on Thursday, April 22 at 8 pm EST, the ER reunion was held for a good cause. The show was part of Stars in the House, which supports the Waterkeeper Alliance. This non-profit organization seeks to provide every community in the world with drinkable, sustainable water.
Returning ER stars who participated in the reunion show included:
● George Clooney, who played pediatrician Doug Ross on the show, famed for his charm and infamous for wooing one woman after another.
● Julianna Margulies, who portrayed gorgeous nurse Carol Hathaway. Carol experienced her own love affairs before having twins… and realizing that Dr. Ross forever had her heart (sigh).
● Anthony Edwards, who took on the “you set the tone” ER leader as Mark Greene.
● Noah Wyle, who matured on the show from wide-eyed, privileged rich kid John Carter to a seasoned, caring physician
For George Clooney, ER offered a chance at redemption. He had struggled to find his place in the entertainment world, and he realized it when the medical drama became a hit.
But both Margulies and Wyle credited Clooney for guiding their own careers as well as his. Julianna supposedly died in the pilot episode. But fans loved her character, and the producers decided to revise the original plot to incorporate her.
“George called me and said, ‘If you’re thinking of taking another job, I urge you not to. I think in the next couple of days, you might be offered a series-regular role,’” recalled Marguiles.
Wyle also credited Clooney, recalling how he called all the actors into his trailer and laid out some ground rules.
“George, very early on, you called us into your trailer and you said, ‘I’ve had the benefit of being on seven series that haven’t gone on. Here’s what we’re going to do differently: We’re all going to be nice to everybody, and we’re going to erase the lines between foreground and background, and cast and crew,’” recalled Noah.
Clooney, according to Wyle, “Laid out the ABCs of professionalism that we operated under.”
ER Reunion – Here’s What The Cast And Producers Say About Return To Prime-Time TV!
Looking back on ER’s success in the NBC line-up from 1994 to 2009, when the show broadcast on Thursdays at 10/9c, it achieved:
● 124 Emmy nominations
● 23 Emmys, and (take notice, current prime-time TV medical shows: Those Emmy Awards include the highly coveted Outstanding Drama Series!)
For years, ER held the record for the longest-running medical drama on prime-time TV. And that opens the door to the question: Now that Grey’s Anatomy has surpassed ER’s record, is it time for a revival or reboot?
Yes, said executive producer John Wells. The highly regarded EP stated that he is on board with a revival if he receives a “really interesting idea.”
Paging John Stamos, an actor who came later to ER but replaced Noah Wyle and George Clooney in the “ladies love him” department. Stamos has said that he’s open to an ER revival as well.
