Euphoria Creator Explains Heartbreaking Finale DeathZendaya and the gang at Euphoria said their official goodbye in the season 3 finale on May 31 on HBO. 

The popular series kicked off in 2019 and lasted three very looooong drawn out seasons. 

When HBO announced the third season would the show’s final season, we knew we were in for a heartbreaking ending. 

But, nobody was mentally prepared to watch Rue overdose in slow motion on a couch.  

Sam Levinson Explains Rue’s Death

Dedicated Euphoria fans know that fan fave Angus Cloud passed away unexpectedly from a drug overdose in 2023. 

After the actor’s death, the writers were forced to write Fezco out of the show and they took a new direction in the final season. 

When Season 3 of Euphoria returned to HBO this spring, there was a 5 year time jump and the gang was no longer in high-school.  

Fezco was currently serving a life-sentence for murder and that was how the writers explained Angus Cloud’s absence from the storyline when the show picked back up.

According to show creator Sam Levinson, he never intended to kill off Rue. 

But after the loss that the show felt after Angus’ death, he wanted to use it as a platform to raise awareness to addiction and overdoses.

Zendaya’s Character Checks Out

It’s not unusual for shows to kill off main characters in the finale, but that didn’t make the ending of Euphoria any less painful to watch. 

Sam Levinson explained to TV Line, “We got the news that Angus passed away [that July]. I’d always been really concerned about the prevalence of fentanyl.  But once he passed away, I had to reconceive the script and I thought, you can’t tell a story about addiction today without the very real consequences. Most people don’t get a second chance. Fentanyl can just take you out in an instant.”
