Grand Hotel Rumors: Will The Show Be Rebooted At New Network?

After months of keeping viewers hanging and stating that the network would not make a decision about the drama until after its finale, ABC finally turned out the lights at Grand Hotel. When the news of cancellation broke, Tanen seemingly gave up hope, tweeting that his show was a “one-season wonder” and that he was heartbroken it was over.

Just two days later, Tanen teased fans that one season might wonderfully turn into season two. The show’s EP hinted to TVLine and @AndySwift that the drama could find new life on another platform and there had been meetings to resurrect it. One of the show’s stars, Bryan Craig (Javi Mendoza) tweeted about Tanen’s quest for Season Two with the words “Hm….”

Tanen, who also worked with Grand Hotel’s Executive Producer, Eva Longoria, on another Latinx-powered drama, Devious Maids, told TVLine that he purposely left big cliffhangers in the finale; however, he would not give them away because he hoped they would be answered during a second season. The biggest question left unanswered by the finale was who shot the hotel’s owner, Santiago Mendoza (Demian Bichir)?

Viewers are also left wondering who will be accused of the crime? Will Santiago live or die? If he survives, can his marriage to Gigi Mendoza (Roselyn Sanchez) survive as well? Will Jason Parker (Chris Warren) discover that Santiago is his real father? What does Santiago changing his will to include Gigi’s two girls mean for his family and the investigation into his shooting? What kind of trouble will Gigi’s con-man ex, Felix Renna (Adrian Pasdar), bring when he returns?

If Tanen can get other executives and viewers interested in the answers to those questions, there are quite a few traditional and non-traditional formats available to change the address of Grand Hotel. The show could move from ABC to another of the Big Four broadcast television networks. American Idol successfully made the jump from FOX to ABC while Brooklyn Nine-Nine moved from FOX to NBC.

TV shows can also switch to pay cable television networks: After getting the ax from ABC, Nashville lasted two more seasons on CMT. Pop TV saved One Day at a Time after it was canceled by Netflix. Grand Hotel could rise again on a streaming service, including Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, following in the footsteps of Lucifer which moved from FOX to Netflix.

Loyal fans will likely follow the show wherever it moves, but, for now, they must wait to find out if Grand Hotel, like its character Santiago Mendoza, has any hope for an afterlife.
