Grey’s Anatomy writer and producer Shonda Rhimes has extended and expanded her existing deal with the streamer Netflix, adding feature films, virtual reality content, and gaming to her existing deal.
The Hollywood Reporter documented that Shonda and her company, Shondaland’s extended deal includes branding and merchandising, while the expanded deal will add live events and experiences.
“When Ted [Sarandos, Netflix CEO] and I decided to break the traditional network TV business model to move Shondaland to Netflix, we were both taking a leap into the unknown,” Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter last week.
“Today, Shondaland at Netflix is creatively thriving, profitable as an asset and engaging audiences around the world with stories that fearlessly challenge viewers and keep them highly entertained all at once,” she added.
Grey’s Anatomy Spoilers – Award-Winning Writer And Producer
This award-winning writer and producer created several hit TV shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away with Murder” and the former landed her as the first African American woman to create and executive produce a Top 10 network series.
Although a newcomer to the streaming platform, Shonda’s first scripted series, “Bridgerton” made a huge win on Netflix last December as it became one of the most-watched shows on the platform ever.
With this success, the streamer renewed the series for more seasons including a spinoff revolving around the character, Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel). Shonda is also working for a drama miniseries titled “Inventing Anna” which investigates the life of a con artist Anna Sorokin, “who stole the hearts — and money — of New York’s social elite” set to air in 2022.
Following Shonda’s expanded latest deal with the platform, Netflix’s head of global TV, Bela Bajaria, who praised the producer for her mission to inclusion, commented: “Shonda makes shows that get the world talking, and we’ve seen the power of her creative vision to translate in any language.”
Bajaria pointed that Shonda’s a brilliant businesswoman and a terrific partner and that they are thrilled for more expansions with her for the following years.

“Grey’s Anatomy” Tops As Most-Watched Series On Netflix
Shonda’s expanded deal with Netflix means Shondaland’s outputs will be welcomed in-house at the platform, which included her first creation, ABC’s medical drama series “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Since 2014, Netflix has been streaming “Grey’s Anatomy” via television series license from ABC, long before Disney owned the mentioned series.
With Grey’s still running for another season and still covered with the contract, the series will last more years on the platform.
With the medical drama making it to the top and with Shonda’s overall deal with Netflix, fans don’t have to worry about the rumors of the show’s early exit on the streaming service.
