Nothing worse than being excited for a new movie or show and realizing you’d have to wait a couple more years for you to actually enjoy it. Bad enough that we had to wait two years for Jenna Ortega’s ‘Wednesday’ to even begin to tease its second season – they say filming has wrapped – and now we’re getting a delayed ‘Harry Potter?’
This is coming after the network posted an open casting call in the UK and Ireland, and promised to make the show as racially diverse as possible.
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Faces Production Delays: Here’s Everything We Know
Originally, when casting calls were announced for the series, the timeline for release was said to be 2026, but according to Film Updates, this has been shifted to 2027, though no explanation was provided.
This does not mean that HBO is any less committed to making an adaptation that’s faithful to the books as can be.
“This new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” Casey Bloys Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content said in a statement before assuring fans of “a faithful adaptation.”
To make sure this happens, the network is working closely with the author of ‘Harry Potter,’ JK Rowling, to find the perfect directors and screenwriters for the show.
However, there seems to be a consensus that the original films, though not faithful adaptations of the books, brought their own brand of magic that sucked in millions of fans.
This is why HBO has chosen to work with Framestore VFX – the company that brought the magical world to life across the eight ‘Harry Potter’ movies. Last we heard, a deal hasn’t been reached, though talks are said to be advancing positively.
In general, everyone involved in this remake of ‘Harry Potter’ is said to be excited to bring the conception to life for a whole new generation to enjoy. “We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Zaslav told Wall Street analysts on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call. “I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, CEO of HBO] and Channing [Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros Television] and we spent some real time with JK and her team.”
Originally, the casting call sought for children between the ages of 9 and 11 by 2025, but we don’t yet know how this release delay could affect that. In general, it is expected to take 10 years to go from ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’ to ‘The Deathly Hollow.’
