Helen Mirren Praises Taylor Sheridan For Disregarding Western Tropes And Writing Wonderful Female Characters

Helen Mirren is giving Taylor Sheridan his laurels when it comes to writing beautiful, intricate, lovable, and best of all, respectable female characters in the western scene. If you ever feel like doubting this sentiment, I would love to refer you to the Zoé Saldana-led ‘Lioness’ and you just might start to understand his incredible appeal when it comes to creating strong female characters.

As one of the leads in the ‘Yellowstone’ spin-off ‘1923,’ Mirren has seen firsthand the true creative nature of Sheridan, and she’s truly in awe of it.

Helen Mirren Says “Young Women Should Be Very Grateful To Taylor Sheridan”

Helen Mirren is happy there’s Taylor Sheridan to fix the mistakes many writers make in the Western genre.

Mirren plays Cara Dutton in the ‘Yellowstone’ spin-off and ‘1883’ sequel, alongside Harrison Ford. At the premiere of the show’s second season, she shared her happiness over the nuanced nature of her character.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said, “Young women should be very grateful to Taylor Sheridan for writing such great women roles. Cara [Mirren’s character] is just one of them.”

The Oscar-winning actress continued, “He’s written a whole series of great, great women’s roles. Those roles didn’t exist when I was growing up in our business. Even as an audience member, I never saw these people on the screen. I never really liked Westerns because the women in them were so awful. I just love the fact that young women now can watch 1923 or any of Taylor’s pieces and see really interesting, complicated, vulnerable, strong… just real people who happen to be women on the screen.”

She has received several accolades for her portrayal of Cara in the Western drama, but if you ask her, the most important thing to having a great character onscreen is the writer/writers having the sense to create one with complexities.

Apart from enjoying the script, she’s also enjoying the time she’s spending filming with her co-star Harrison Ford.

In fact, she’s enjoying it too much she won’t say no to returning for a third season as long as she’s got the ‘Indiana Jones’ star by her side.

“Well, if any other job came my way where I got to work with Harrison, I would say yes in a nanosecond. If it happens to be an extension of this story, absolutely. As long as Harrison is in it, I’ll be there,” she promised.
