ICarly Cast Explains Sam Puckett’s Absence

Jennette McCurdy The iCarly reboot we’ve all been waiting for premiered on June 17, and it’s a delight that Sam’s absence — which we all felt going back into the world we left behind 10 years ago — was explained in a way that truly did our beloved Sam justice. The show’s first three episodes are now available for you to stream on Paramount+, with ten more episodes to look forward to in the coming weeks.

It’s a testament to all the kids that iCarly debuted to that they didn’t grow up alone. Carly (Miranda Cosgrove), Freddie (Nathan Kress) and Spencer (Jerry Trainor) also grew up, and now they’re leading grown-up lives and saying grown-up words.

Joining Carly once again in her life is ecstatic, and it’s a blessing that most of the main original casts reprised their roles, but sadly, we may never get to see anything of Sam Puckett (played by Jennette McCurdy).

Sam is famous on the show for her boyish strength and attitude. She is Carly’s best friend and co-host on their famous webshow iCarly. She also dated Freddie towards the end of the show after loathing the thought of it for much of the show.

But McCurdy’s absence is based on her choice to remove herself from her previous roles as they were not “fulfilling” for her.

Why Jennette McCurdy Won’t Reprise Her Role As Sam Puckett In The iCarly Revival

After iCarly ended in 2012, Jennette McCurdy starred in another Nickelodeon show “Sam & Kat”, reprising her character Sam alongside Ariana Grande’s Kat. The show ran for one season only, ending in 2014.
After that, McCurdy went on to star in the Netflix series “Between” as Wiley Day until 2016.

She also wrote, produced and starred in her own web series titled “What’s Next For Sarah”.

In 2017, McCurdy revealed that she is no longer interested in acting and will be focusing on writing and directing moving forward.

Recently, she launched her one-woman theater show, “I’m Glad My Mom Died” which subsequently had a sold-out run in Los Angeles and New York City.

“I resent my career in a lot of ways,” McCurdy revealed at the time, adding that she was “ashamed” by the majority of the roles she portrayed.

When iCarly reboot was announced in 2020, it became clear that Sam really has let go of the past when it was announced that she won’t be reprising her role. The show’s creators added that the show will miss her, but that they will continue to support her, and if she does decide to come back, the door will always be open.

“Jennette is busy working on her book which sold to Simon & Schuster as well as bringing her one-woman show back to the stage,” McCurdy’s representatives announced. “She is also working on some other film & TV projects which have not yet been announced.”

iCarly Addresses Sam’s Absence On The Show’s First Episode

In the first episode of the series, Carly updated Freddie on Sam’s whereabouts.

The friends were discussing the possibility of relaunching their famous video channel in a bid to make Carly’s ex-boyfriend jealous, but Carly isn’t confident she can revive iCarly on her own.

“I just want to make things again,” Carly said.

“You don’t need a partner to do that,” Freddie advised.

“Yeah,” Carly added. “I don’t need a partner, I need Sam.” Carly then tells us why she can’t have Sam back, “she’s off following her bliss with that biker gang.”

Freddie then worries if she is okay, to which Carly cheekily replied, “It’s Sam. I hope they’re okay.”

Miranda Cosgrove recently promised fans that we will keep hearing about Sam in the following episodes, so while fans may not see her, her presence will still be felt.
