Kevin Costner has decided to get back in the Western film saddle amid his “Yellowstone” TV show success. And the movie will mark the first time that Costner has directed a film since 2003. As to why the busy actor would take on another project amid “Yellowstone”?
Kevin views the upcoming Western as a passion project, per Pop Culture. Find out what Costner revealed about his new movie plus an update on his “Yellowstone” role below.
Kevin Costner Reflects On New Passion Project Picture
In 2003, Kevin Costner directed and starred in the popular drama, “Open Range.” But in the years since, Costner has shifted his focus to performing in front of the cameras. However, now Kevin feels ready to return to the director’s chair for his passion project, a Western movie titled “Horizon.”
The “Yellowstone” star plans to begin casting in February, with filming beginning in August in Utah. And in addition to directing, Costner will produce and star in “Horizon.” His production company, Territory Pictures, will provide financing.
“America’s expansion into the west was one that was fraught with peril and intrigue from the natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land, and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it,” shared Kevin. “Horizon tells the story of that journey in an honest and forthcoming way, highlighting the points of view and consequences of the characters’ life and death decisions.”
Kevin Costner Wins Big In Betting On ‘Yellowstone’ Success
But fans of “Yellowstone” needn’t worry that Kevin Costner will leave “Yellowstone.” The actor’s bet that the TV show would become a success proved right. For instance, for season 1, Costner reportedly earned $500,000 per episode. But as the show exploded in popularity, Kevin allegedly negotiated repeatedly.
As a result, Costner reportedly banked $1.2 million per episode for Season 4. And look to see that amount grow for season 5. Add in an alleged overhead bonus, and Kevin likely will remain with “Yellowstone” for as long as the show continues.

Beyond the financial benefits, though, Costner has discussed why he believes in “Yellowstone.” For instance, the actor shared that he became intrigued in learning the series location of Bitterroot Valley. After catching his interest, “Yellowstone” met his requirements for a project.
“It has to entertain, you have to be able to see yourself in it. Can people gather around this idea, then can your idea pivot off that? Yellowstone was a perfect marriage,” added Kevin. But he urged viewers not to see the show as pure fiction.
“Yellowstone” does not exist in a fantasy world, according to Costner. And even as the original American West fades away, the characters offer “a level of unpredictablilty, of danger,” added the actor. That unpredictable quality married with the reality of the original American West continues to appeal to the “Yellowstone” star.
