Law & Order: SVU Spoilers – A Boundary Between Olivia Benson And Elliot Stabler

The current seasons of both SVU, starring Hargitay, and Law & Order: Organized Crime, starring Meloni have hinted at the possibility. In the midseason finale of Law & Order SVU, a drunk Olivia Benson spoke to Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) and referred to Stabler as her “home.”

She then agreed with Rollins, that it was Stabler’s dead wife, killed in a bombing in Stabler’s return episode to SVU aptly titled “Return of the Prodigal Son,” that created the “boundary” preventing the two from getting romantic. “With her gone it’s like there’s nothing but possibility, which is paralyzing,” Benson said.

Law & Order: SVU Spoilers – A New Beginning For Detective Stabler?

Over on Organized Crime, a drunken Stabler confesses similarly to an Italian cop and former acquaintance Tia Leonetti (Ayelet Zurer). Waking after a night of drinking Stabler realizes that he spilled the beans to his old friend. When Leonetti tells him, “You said there’s a woman you’re in love with,” a puzzled Stabler responds, “I did?”.

In a more recent episode, Stabler mentions his rocky relationship with Benson in a therapy session. “I recently lost a friend, a very close friend, partner,” he says. “Through neglect on my part. Fear, selfishness.” The therapist takes a shot and says, “sounds like you’re a man in need of a new beginning” (via NBC).

Law & Order: SVU Spoilers – Marissa Hargitay Lays It Out

And finally, in an interview with Today, Hargitay described Benson’s feelings for Stabler as going beyond partnership. “Olivia being the product of a rape and raised by a single mother, hasn’t had a lot of stability in her life in terms of a male figure,” she explained.

“And Elliot Stabler was the first person that really came in her life, that really had her back, whose focus was to protect her. There was such a deep safety in that — knowing that these two people keeping each other safe and keeping each other alive was the most important thing that gave her such a confidence and a stability that she never had.

“So, I think that spending that much time with somebody, but then knowing that it could never be… but, the chemistry has been undeniable, and has been a complicated factor in their relationship.” Find out for yourself when Law & Order: Special Victims Unit airs Thursday, January 26 at 8 PM CST on NBC.
