Law & Order spoilers and updates reveal some breaking news in the Law & Order franchise department. In it’s twenty-fourth season, the Emmy-nominated ER star Maura Tierney has been cast as Camryn Manheim’s replacement.
Law & Order Spoilers – Manheim’s Character, Lieutenant Kate Dixon Departed
Camryn Manheim‘s departure from the role of Lieutenant Kate Dixon was announced in May. The Emmy-nominated star of The Practice made her final appearance in the season 23 finale.
While there was no on-screen explanation for Dixon’s exit, franchise creator Dick Wolf thanked her for her contribution to the series.
TV Line has confirmed that ER alum Maura Tierney will be joining Law & Order season 24 as a new lieutenant. Details about her character are being kept secret, but this casting update marks Tierney’s return to NBC.
Law & Order Spoilers – Tierney Appeared On ER As Abby Lockhart
For ten years, she portrayed the character Abby Lockhart on ER, a pivotal drama for the network, and received an Emmy nomination for her exceptional performance.
She is also recognized for her roles on other NBC series such as NewsRadio, The Good Wife, and The Affair, the latter of which garnered her yet another accolade.
Those who have watched NBC’s top notch procedural dramas for the past fifteen or twenty years will find Maura Tierney a familiar face.
NBC’s dramas have run the gamut from medical dramas, police dramas, and of course, fire department dramas, Chicago Fire being a notable example.
Law & Order Spoilers – The Law And Order Franchise Has Always Had A Revolving Cast Door
Law & Order season 24 is set to begin with an explanation for Dixon’s departure, even though cast changes have become a regular occurrence on the show. Anthony Anderson’s return as NYPD Detective Kevin Bernand was short-lived, lasting only one season.
However, Mehcad Brooks stepped in to fill the role of NYPD Detective Jalen Shaw in season 22 and has been a mainstay on the series ever since.
Jeffrey Donovan portrayed NYPD Detective Frank Cosgrove in the initial two seasons of the reboot before leaving due to creative disparities.
The exit of the character was briefly acknowledged in Law & Order season 23, as Cosgrove is succeeded by Detective Vincent Riley (portrayed by Veep actor Reid Scott), and Riley inquires about Shaw’s previous partner.
Law & Order Spoilers – The Biggest Exit Was Sam Waterson In Season 23
In a surprising turn of events, long-time Law & Order star Sam Waterston bid farewell in season 23 after over 400 episodes as Jack McCoy. Nicholas Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) steps in as the new District Attorney following McCoy’s resignation in protest over a controversial case.
While cast changes are a staple of the show, the original series had a number of actors who remained for years. The current iteration of Law & Order has only Odelya Halevi and Hugh Dancy left from its recent relaunch.
Law & Order season 24 premieres Thursday, October 3 NBC, followed by Law & Order: SVU-all stream on Peacock, including Law & Order: Organized Crime, which is now exclusively streaming.
