Ray Donovan, the American television crime series about a mediator for a law firm that handles celebrity and wealthy clients, which to date holds the record for the biggest premiere on Showtime, was abruptly cancelled on February 4, 2020. After 82 episodes, over the cause of 7 seasons, the drama is finally packing up and shipping off. But according to a recent announcement, the series will add one more plot that is expected to tie things together and give it the ending that it deserves.
The shock Of The cancellation
On February 4, 2020, Showtime released an announcement stating that they were finally going to put an end to the Ray Donovan show. As there were no warning signs up until the time that the announcement was made, the fans and the showrunner, Dave Hollander, were left in shock.
The fans took to social media to show their displeasure of the cancellation move, and Liev Schreiber, who portrays the show’s main character, wrote on his Instagram account that due to the fan’s support and their massive activity on social media, there was a possibility of the show returning.
According to sources, the cancellation move wasn’t due to the series viewer rating dwindling, but because of political reasons after a recent merging between CBS, which owns Showtime and Viacom.
While there have been previous talks of the series nearing its end, fans weren’t expecting it to end with season 7, which according to most of the show’s fans, wasn’t a proper ending.
Despite a strong fan reaction and Liev Schreiber hoping the network might grant them one last season, Showtime announced that it was moving on from the show, thanking its cast and audience, and also acknowledging that it was a great thing that the show ended with such strong audience viewership.
After The Initial Drama
It seems that after a year later, probably a few months after fans have stopped crying out about the show’s rapid and unresolved conclusion, ViacomCBS network is finally deciding to grant Ray Donovan’s fans, and Liev Schreiber, the ending that they needed. They are rounding up the show with a brand new wrap-up feature length film that will air in 2022. How that would live up to anybody’s expectations is still largely unpredictable.

Confirmed returning characters include Liev Schreiber, the titular character, John Voight and Kerris Dorsey. Schreiber is co-writing the script with series showrunner David Hollander. Hollander is also directing.
Production is slated to begin later in the year, with New York as the set’s location. The film should pick up where the series left off, with Mickey, played by Voight, in the wind, and Ray determined to find and stop him before he causes any more carnage.
The series received several awards, including 10 Emmy nominations, with the series star John Voight winning the Golden Globe Awards for best-supporting actor in a series. Fans are excited about this announcement, and the network is promising to make it the ending that everyone deserves.
