Star Trek has a new spin-off series in the making, and it’s official. The series, Starfleet Academy, had been rumored for quite some time, since 2018, to be exact. In an official statement by co-show runners Noga Landau and Alex Kurtzman, the Star Trek spin-off is now all set to start its journey. The CBS series follows a fleet of teenagers who are students of the Starfleet Academy. As they age, they endure rigorous training, learning about interstellar missions that they will be a part of in the future. So, do we have a potential premiere date for Starfleet Academy? Keep reading to find out the details!
The official announcement didn’t outline the specific timeline for Starfleet Academy, nor do we have any details on specific plots or characters. However, it is confirmed that Alex will be the head honcho for the show. He has been credited with helming a big part of the franchise’s shows, especially the ones that have premiered in the past few years. Prior to his success with the Star Trek show, he worked on Star Trek movies. He has also been a writer on shows like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. Alex Kurtzman has also been credited with movies like Transformers, The Legend Of Zorro, and The Island.
On the other hand, Landau is a well-known TV writer who shot to popularity with The Magicians TV series as its story editor. Later on, she also became the showrunner and helmed the Nancy Drew show that aired on The CW. This isn’t the first time Star Trek fiction has explored Starfleet Academy. There are several examples where we can see references to the academy throughout the Star Trek franchise. Moreover, there are substantial plotlines referencing the academy in Deep Space Nine, The Next Generation, and many more.
Additionally, Starfleet Academy also got its very own series of video games released in the 1990s era for several platforms. As per reports, the spin-off series will start production next year and will premiere sometime in 2025 on Paramount+.
The series’ confirmation comes as a big hope for Paramount+ subscribers who had been concerned after a plethora of cancelations that happened on the network. While shows like Picard and Discovery are nearing their end, there is also hope as the network doubled down with new renewals for Lower Decks and Stranger New Worlds.
