The Nevers: The Historical Science Fiction That’s All About The Drama, And The Catchy Phrases

What if you lived in the Victorian time and people had unnatural abilities, and now imagine, what if all those people with the mysterious powers are all women? That’s the series that Joss Wheedon has created for HBO.

The Nevers Premise

“Three years ago, every one of ‘the touched’ woke up with a power,” were the words that served to open the trailer and direct the audience to what they should expect, or not expect. “The touched” is something that strangely happens to mostly females, causing them to have strange, unusual, chaotic and even dangerous powers. To some people in the society, “they have deformities and afflictions,” and to others, “they’re unhappy.”

I think the movie takes us into a world where women have the powers to recreate or destroy the world. Of course there’s going to be people who don’t understand them, people who hate them, people that are afraid of them, and believe me, from the little that is revealed in the trailer, there is no shortage of those. But the idea of females being the ones that are hunted the most is something that’s odd and fulfilling in a way.

If you’re always up for twisted and psychologically challenged lead characters, then The Nevers absolutely settles that for you. Its heroine is a danger to the London elite, and I’m I allowed to call her a lover of good alcoholic drinks?

These Victorian women are not here to play dress up, talk about balls, royals and handsome men, these ones are here to kick whatever’s standing in their way out. They’re fearless, they’re weird, and they’re powerful, and in an era that’s mostly all about the royals and their drama, this is something that promises to change the weather.

The Nevers Production And Release

HBO got the series after a bidding war with other networks and streaming services including Netflix. Joss Wheedon was originally supposed to serve as a writer, director, executive producer and showrunner for the series, but later left the show, stating that the coronavirus pandemic had taken a toll on his energy levels.

There were also accusations of workplace harassment made against Wheedon at the time, which could possibly be the reason why Wheedon’s name is not mentioned in the marketing and promotion of the series. British screenwriter Philippa Goslet now serves as the series showrunner.
