This “Full House” Favorite Initially Wanted To Turn Down His Role In Fear Of Being Upstaged By “Funny Kids”

Who knew that the drama going on behind-the-scenes of “Full House” could stand up to the onscreen drama? But with more behind-the-scenes stories making it into the light, it’s starting to feel as if the cameras should not have started rolling only when the stars are in character.

Can you believe we almost didn’t get John Stamos as Uncle Jesse because Jodie Sweetin stole the show? In a chat with host Dave Coulier on the first episode of the “Full House Rewind” podcast, we got the lowdown on the reason Stamos almost balked at appearing on the hit TV show.

John Stamos – Was Less Than Thrilled A Little Kid Stole The Show During “Full House” Reading

After the cast’s first table read, Stamos tried to wriggle his way out of the show because he wasn’t exactly sure he wanted to play second fiddle to Jodie Sweetin’s Stephanie Tanner. Well, it’s a good thing he didn’t eventually leave the show because it went on to become a hit immediately after its 1987 debut and cemented Stamos’ status as a bonafide actor.

Chatting with “Full House” creator Jeff Franklin, Dave Coulier recalled the sticky situation that happened right at the beginning of the series. “I remembered our first table read,” Coulier said, as Franklin added, “Where there’s a room full of studio and network executives. They were all there to see Stamos, I think.”

This immediately changed when Sweetin started reading her lines and captured the attention of the room with her spectacular performance.

“[She] stole the whole thing,” Franklin recalled.

Coulier, who played Joey Gladstone on the series, noted, “And I remember walking out with John. He’s like, ‘The whole show is going to be her. We can’t do this!”

However, Franklin didn’t learn until much later that Stamos, 59, wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about the show anymore and wanted out. Franklin remembered Stamos “was so upset about having to play second fiddle to these really funny kids” he called his agent and tried to quit the show, saying, “This is a mistake. Get me off this show.”

Something probably changed his mind because he went on to play Jesse Katsopolis for all 8 seasons of the show!
