When Is Grey’s Anatomy Returning In 2021?

Grey’s Anatomy: Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey)Grey’s Anatomy spoilers tease that Grey’s fans want to know when Grey’s Anatomy will return to the airwaves. Cast member Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey has some answers.

Grey’s Anatomy Spoilers – Ellen Pompeo Talked To CBS Sunday Morning And Gave Some Updates

Ellen did say that season seventeen will return to ABC and the airwaves, after a long hiatus, on March 11, 2021. However she could not promise that season seventeen would not be the last season, which prompted fans to cry out for the long-running show’s renewal. In particular, Ellen said she simply didn’t know – nothing had been decided as to seasons of Grey’s Anatomy beyond this season, which is season seventeen.

As Grey’s Anatomy fans will remember, the show has not been on with new episodes since December, which began its winter 2020-2021 hiatus. In that final episode before the winter hiatus, Meredith Grey, who had been battling Covid-19, had been put on a ventilator because her condition had worsened.

Fans were devastated, and wondered if the popular character and star of the show was going to die! After all, Meredith Grey is the Grey in Grey’s Anatomy! When asked if the show would continue, she was very vague with her answers – and mentioned “we” were really trying to “figure things out” right then. Whether the “we” she referred to meant the network, the showrunners, or even herself, is uncertain. She was then questioned whether she was specifically referring to a decision to end the show, she did clarify in the affirmative – and offered additional insight as she questioned what storyline would be appropriate to end such an iconic show? She clarified further, stating that she wanted to make sure they do her character and the show’s end right, and that it would be something that the fans would agree with as far as the end story.

Grey’s Anatomy Spoilers – Ellen Pompeo Says They Have Choices In An End Story, But Wants It To End On A Positive Note

Ellen later added that they don’t know how they will end the show as far as storylines go, and that they did have choices. That implies there is more to be written and filmed before the show would go off the air. Some fans who saw the interview, which is on You Tube, interpreted her as saying the show may be in its final season.

With Grey’s Anatomy being on the air over sixteen years, no one would really be surprised, but a few viewers made it clear that they don’t want it to end with Meredith Grey dying from Covid 19, and Ellen herself seems to agree with that. She wants it to end – when it does end – on a positive note.

The death of the star character Grey’s Anatomy’s namesake dying of Covid 19 would certainly not be a positive note! Fans certainly don’t feel that an ending like that would do the iconic show justice. Others said they would be heartbroken when the show ends. Fans reacted in a similar manner when Patrick Dempsey, who plays Meredith Grey’s onscreen love Derek Shepherd, was interviewed by ET Canada. He also kept anything he may have known about the subject of the show’s ending secret as he merely stated it would be interesting to see what happens in the next few months!

Another key Grey’s Anatomy player, Chandra Wilson, who plays Miranda Bailey, gave fans hope that the show would not come to an end just yet when she told Entertainment Tonight she didn’t think the current storyline would spell the end of the show. This was in December, 2020. She said that she knew, at least from a creative standpoint, that there have been many conversations about how the seasons, not the show itself, would end and then they don’t happen that way for various reasons.

However, one thing is for sure; when Grey’s Anatomy returns, it will be in a crossover with Station 19. Hopefully it will include a positive update on Meredith’s health!
