Boston Blue was initially conceived as a standalone series-however, it underwent a transformation into a spin-off of Blue Bloods, centering on the character of Danny Reagan. This shift means that Donnie Wahlberg will reprise the role he first brought to life in 2010.

This development has sparked curiosity among fans about the potential return of other cast members from the original show, many eager to see Tom Selleck, who portrayed the family patriarch, Frank Reagan.

An insider recently shared insights with Closer Weekly, revealing, “Tom has expressed strong feelings about the conclusion of Blue Bloods. He wasn’t ready to part ways with that character, so he’s definitely open to making guest appearances on Donnie’s new series.”

The Original Series Ended Very Emotionally

A source has revealed that Wahlberg, who is also executive producer for Boston Blue, maintains a strong friendship with Selleck, increasing the chances of Selleck making an appearance.

According to the insider, “Their bond has only deepened over nearly 15 years of collaboration, resulting in a remarkable friendship, they’ve become like family to each other, showcasing a profound connection.”

The source added, “Filming their final dinner scene on Blue Bloods was an emotional experience for both, marking a significant farewell. However, with this new series in the works, they might have the opportunity to share the screen again.

Although it won’t replicate the traditional family dinners from the previous show, it’s set in Boston, and Tom would be enthusiastic about participating.”

Many Former Cast Members Have Been Open About The Emotional Ending

Numerous cast members of Blue Bloods have candidly expressed how deeply emotional the series finale was.

In a December interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wahlberg recalled, “I remember Tom recited a poem—not just read it, but had it memorized. He would often share these wise little insights with us during dinner.”

Wahlberg went on to reveal that he was so moved he “began to cry and couldn’t stop for several hours.” Meanwhile, Boston Blue is scheduled to premiere on CBS, with its debut currently anticipated for 2025, presumably this coming fall although filming details haven’t been released.
