The series first premiered on November 14, 2021, on Showtime and received accolades and critical acclaim for its cast performances and epic storyline. Moreover, it also received seven Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series as well as two acting nominations for Ricci and Lynskey. Given its massive success, the series was then renewed for a second season on December 2021. On December 2022, even before the second season premiered, the network renewed the show for a third season.
Yellowjackets is set in 1996 and follows a New Jersey High School Girls’ Soccer team that travels all the way to Seattle to partake in a national tournament. However, an unfortunate accident caused the plane they were flying in to crash over Canada and fall deep into the wilderness. Now, the surviving members of the soccer team are stranded for more than nineteen months.
The series showcases their attempts to survive and make it to the mainland. Yellowjackets showcase a switch between the present and the past, where the adult selves of the plane crash survivors are trying to deal with their present-day lives in the year 2021.
Yellowjackets’ storyline is mostly influenced by the Andes flight disaster that happened in 1972 and the Donner Party (1846-1847). Both of these are real stories where people had to resort to cannibalism in order to make it alive. The series is Showtime’s second-most streamed series, right behind Dexter: New Blood.
