Costner admitted that he never wanted to quit the show and always was ready to finish up the show. There were some issues with contracts and the filming of Season 5.

After the producers decided to split Season 5 into a sixth season, this also caused some changes in the actors’ contracts. Costner’s contract was one that was affected.
Costner pointed out that he was starting a movie during the breaks of filming Yellowstone.
Because the producers decided to split up the seasons, this caused some changes in Costner’s schedule. Since he was already filming a movie, he couldn’t find the time to do both.
This is where the rumor that Costner was only working on Yellowstone for one week during the final season.

Yellowstone Spoilers – Kevin Costner’s Feelings About Yellowstone
Costner went on to talk about his true feelings about Yellowstone and working with Sheridan. He said, “I’ve never missed a day of work. I’ve never left before fulfilling my contractual obligations.
A lot of times, I stay as much as I can.” He also said that he tried to work things out with Sheridan and that he was very let down with the cast and crew because they didn’t put the horrible rumors to rest.
As of right now, Costner hasn’t made an official statement about whether or not he will be back on the show for the final season. The rumors will continue to swirl and we will keep an eye on the show to see what is next.
