Yellowstone fans have been waiting impatiently for the final episodes of season 5 to air on Paramount Network. The WGA Writers’ and SAG-AFTRA actors’ strikes were mostly to blame for the delays in airing season 5 part 2. Now, the official date has been announced, as well as confirmation of two new spinoffs in the modern Western universe.

The Taylor Sheridan-led, modern Western series Yellowstone was canceled a while back, with no more episodes after the finale of season 5. Meanwhile, delays with the second half of season 5, fans have waited impatiently to see how the series ends. Deadline reported earlier this week that a date had been announced to air the final episodes.

However, fans likely won’t be thrilled to hear that part 2 is set to air in November 2024. Readers may recall that at one stage it was announced that part 2 would drop in November 2023. Regrettably, we now have to wait a year to find out what happened to the Dutton family and their ranch.

Two new spinoffs of the hit modern Western series

However, there was more positive news to say Paramount has officially greenlit two new spinoff series in the Yellowstone universe. One is the prequel series, 1944, and the second is a contemporary spinoff, 2024. Both spinoffs currently have working titles.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios made a statement relating the news, saying:

Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions – and we’re just getting started.

On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.

Yellowstone was co-created by Sheridan and John Lindon and debuted in June 2018. The modern Western series stars Kevin Costner in the lead as John Dutton, a sixth-generation patriarch of the Dutton family. The family owns the largest ranch in the United States, Dutton Ranch, set in Montana.

Besides Costner, Yellowstone stars Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Forrie Smith, Jefferson White, Denim Richards, Finn Little, Ian Bohen, Ryan Bingham and Gil Birmingham.

The series was a massive success with the first part of season 5 premiering to ratings records in all demographics while drawing 12.1 million live-plus-same-day viewers. This made it the biggest premiere ever for Yellowstone. However, despite its huge success, Paramount announced in May that the show would end with season 5.

Fans have already watched the existing prequels of Yellowstone in 1883 and 1923, both on Paramount+. Coming next year, the Dutton story will continue with new spinoffs, a prequel named 1944 and a modern-day spinoff with the working title 2024. However, so far details are unclear as to what viewers can expect.

What can Yellowstone fans expect?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the spinoffs are expected to “continue exploring the Dutton family dynasty with new characters and locations, as well as some existing characters.” Both new spinoffs will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.

Currently, early seasons of Yellowstone are currently airing weekly on CBS, due to a lack of content with the strikes. With so much time before part 2 of season 5 drops, fans might want to catch up with Yellowstone, as all seasons are now available to stream on Peacock. Meanwhile, 1883 and 1923 are still streaming on Paramount+

  1. Sheri says

As far as I’m concerned, Sheridan left 1923 hanging. Waiting another year for Yellowstone Series 5, Part 2 is not something I am interested in watching or anything else from Sheridan. His dreams are bigger than he is and I won’t be left wondering anymore.
