Fact Check: Did A Rainbow Appear When Queen Elizabeth Died?

Queen Elizabeth passed away on September 8, and it wasn’t a huge surprise given that she was nearly 100 years old and reportedly in ill health. Depending on where people lived and their personal feelings, it seemed like a somber and sad passing. However, much is made about the rainbow that appeared over Windsor Castle. Did it really happen? Queen Elizabeth Seemed Unwell And Very Frail

After the passing of her husband, Prince Phillip, royal watchers couldn’t help but notice her slide into ill health. In fact, some conspiracy theorists argued that she already died some time ago. However, it all became real in the hearts of the British people when members of the family reportedly rushed to Balmoral. Prince Charles, now King Charles III, went to her bedside with now Queen Consort, Camilla Parker-Bowles, and Prince William. 

Royal family loyalists grew concerned and they started gathering outside Windsor Castle in London. At the time, Queen Elizabeth wasn’t there, as she moved to Balmoral, her favorite estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. There, she performed her last official duty, by appointing Liz Truss as the new Prime Minister of the UK. Ahead of her passing being revealed, and when the flag was lowered at Windsor, folks started sharing photos of a rainbow at Windsor Castle. 

Queen Elizabeth Passes – Did A Rainbow Appear?

As the flag lowered to honor the monarch, apparently, the rainbow looked absolutely stunning. So, a nation in mourning started to express its emotions about the almost supernatural appearance over a drought-stricken England. However, there are always skeptics, so Snopes fact checkers went to work to scope it out. 

If you wonder about the veracity of the rainbow and the passing of Queen Elizabeth, we can confirm that the fact-checking site definitely gave the rainbow a big “True” tick. What really rocked those who mourned the monarch is the fact that it seemed to stay for a long time. Apparently, it was particularly bright as the flags were lowered. 

Do Bright Rainbows Often Occur Over The Castle?

While some folks ascribe the rainbow to the passing of Queen Elizabeth, there are other photos of them over the Thames. Mind you, none of them look as good as the one on September 8. However, it is interesting to note that an image search more often reveals such beautiful rainbows over Edinborough Castle in Scotland.

Actually, if it was just a weather phenomenon or not doesn’t matter to the royal family watchers. The fact is, that humans like to take comfort from nature during times of bereavement. That rainbow will probably echo through history for almost as long as the Queen reigned.
