With Prince Charles next in line for the British throne and Queen Elizabeth II grappling with her own mortality in the last year as she lost her husband of more than 70 years, Prince Philip, at the age of 99 last April, her attitude seems to have changed towards Charles. The health problems that have been plaguing the 96-year-old monarch since last fall also seem to be taking their toll. That means Charles’ time to ascend to the throne might be sooner rather than later and the queen knows this.
Queen Elizabeth Allows Visibility For Charles
While the queen made a few brief appearances at her own Platinum Jubilee both on the first day at as it closed when she waved to the crowd from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, Charles had a much more visible role than his mother did during the festivities that the whole world watched. And that was the plan.
“[The Queen] sees this as a great opportunity for the transition to be visible,” royal historian Robert Lacey told People.
Royal author Sally Bedell Smith assured that the queen is still determined to remain at the helm and remind people who is queen, but while also reminding people who the future king is.
“She is in the saddle, but this gets people accustomed to [Charles’s] future role as King,” she said. “There was a feeling of celebrating the past and anticipating the new era.”
Charles Showed His Human Side
To much of the world, Prince Charles has always seemed aloof and distant, but as he has grown older he has seemed to relax and become more of a family man and the Jubilee also allowed him to show that side of himself as he interacted with his grandson, especially young Prince Louis, who stole the show as he got bored with the show as any four-year-old would.

“How utterly charming that was,” another insider source told People. “When you consider that he has been said to be a remote parent, to see him do that was charming.”
Indeed, Louis’ behavior seemed to rightfully frustrate his mother, Kate Middleton, but his grandfather took him on his lap in a seeming attempt to quell the little boy’s boredom and it seemed to work. With the way Charles now interacts with children, one would say he is finally ready to be king.
