Since Dr. Mina returned to Nigeria, there have been speculations on her replacement but the show’s executive producer Andrew Chapman addressed the issues by speaking to TVLine.
According to him, “The Resident” has no plans in replacing her role by introducing a new character. Rather, the show will give the spotlight to its two recent cast additions in the next remaining installments in the show having only four more episodes to go. Jessica Lucas as Billie and Anuja Joshi as Leela will have increased visibility in the show in zooming in their personal stories and struggles in the medical world.
“Because we knew Mina was leaving from early on, one of the things we did was look for people to bring into Chastain who are not replacements but are additions to the cast who will be fun to watch and will… bring new elements into the show,” Chapman explained.
The Resident Spoilers – Up Close
Jessica Lucas is a Canadian Actress who is a “Gotham and Gracepoint” alumnae. She was introduced in the medical drama in December 2020, who was titled “the smartest person in the room” and was once a top neurosurgery resident at Chastain. But her know-it-all attitude got her into trouble after she committed a tragic error that ended in her termination.
The character has a history with Nic (Emily VanCamp) not only as colleagues but also as childhood friends. Nic loved her since then and might be the only one who is excited about her return.
“Billie’s complicated backstory will get more complicated as the next couple of episodes unroll. We feel like that’s a star in the making and really big addition to the show,” Chapman teased.
Alongside Lucas, the relatively new actress Anuja Joshi made her official Hollywood debut in the show last March as Dr. Leela Devi. She starred in the web series Hello Mini but Dr. Devi is her first big role as a surgical intern at Chastain.
Chapman claimed that Dr. Leela is an embodiment of what “The Resident” is all about. “It’s about learning how to be a doctor, learning how the system can screw you up… And yet, as a character, she’s so stubborn and ambitious, and she will not be knocked down,” he explained.
Chapman and the other show writers have agreed these two characters are “fresh and so interesting.” “Both characters are going to have big storylines going forward for the rest of the season. And, knock on wood, we get picked up for a fifth season, they will have big storylines in Season 5,” Chapman added.
