In tonight’s WCTH episode, Little Jack Thornton was diagnosed with diabetes. There was no cure for diabetes at the time. It was considered a death sentence and so Elizabeth was essentially told that her child was going to die. If it hadn’t been for Mei, she would have lost all hope.

Mei had read several medical journals. She read that the University of Toronto was working on a medicine for diabetes. It wasn’t a cure only it would allow Little Jack to live a somewhat normal life. It would give him the insulin that his body lacks. It also was this or nothing.

The University was accepting patients to give them this new treatment. They haven’t accepted patients as young as Little Jack and so Mei wanted to travel there with her husband. They wanted to make a case for Little Jack. They wanted him to receive medication as soon as possible.

Elizabeth including a letter from herself could also help. There was no one else that could make the doctors see how much Little Jack matters. He was Elizabeth’s only child. He was her whole world. The one thing she had left from her late husband.

Yet, Elizabeth struggled with writing the letter. She’s written a book. She just couldn’t bring herself to write a letter about why her son deserved to live.

She was struggling with facing that fear when Rosemary helped. Rosemary helped Elizabeth to organize her thoughts. She also helped out with meals. The whole town put together food baskets for the Thorntons. Elizabeth was a huge part of their community and they didn’t want her to lose her son. They did their best to help Elizabeth during this trying time.

They also prayed for her boy. Little Jack was so tired all the time. He couldn’t even bring himself to play with the other kids. He was napping more and more and so the other kids came up with an idea. They knew how much Little Jack loves baseball.

They went to Elizabeth’s home and they asked her if they could play baseball over the radio. This way the little boy didn’t have to miss out. It was Angela’s idea. She was blind and getting a play by play from the others was how she followed the local games.

Angela made the program great. She played an opener on the piano. She did sound effects. She also got the hosts talking about baseball and it was such a great program that the adults also got involved. They loved following the game.

It was so exciting that they threw a party after a home run. Little Jack loved the new program. It was great news in the middle of all the bad. Mei heard back from the university doctors. They said they couldn’t treat Little Jack if he doesn’t live in Toronto.

The medication has to be used within days of it being manufactured. The doctors weren’t going to approve for it to be transported for just one patient. Either Little Jack moves to Toronto or he doesn’t get the medication. The people in charge clearly hadn’t read Elizabeth’s letter.

They also mentioned that they would open up territorial clinics in time and her son didn’t have that long. The only way they get the doctors to speed up the treatment was by finding a group of at least nine people with diabetes from the nearby territories.

Those with the condition would have to travel to Hope Valley every month for their injection. Only it was still better than nothing. They could live with the insulin or they could die if they don’t wish to travel. Rosemary did a radio program about it.

She asked everyone who has it or who knows someone that has it to call the Queen Hearts Saloon. They heard back from seven other people willing sign up for insulin injections. They were still short and that’s when Elizabeth decided to confront the doctors.

They ignored her letter. They couldn’t ignore her call. Elizabeth called the university and she begged for treatment. They were willing to hear her because they agreed to treat the patients, but then there was a storm. It was a bad one. It took out one of the train tracks.

Mei and Hickam were stuck on the train and it would have been a day before the tracks cleared. No one wanted Little Jack to wait that long. They got out the car and they went to Mei and Hickam. They gave them a ride back to Hope Valley. And the insulin arrived in time to save Little Jack’s life.

Little Jack was so tired that he didn’t even wake up when he received the first shot. He slept right through it and he later woke up healthier than he was before. The injection worked. He was going to live.

And some hope returned to Hope Valley.

THE END!
